A Community of Caring

In the wake of last Saturday’s tornado, our wonderful community has poured out their support for those whose homes were destroyed and who lost loved ones. Multiple benefit funds have emerged for individual families and this past week the Greater Madison County Community Foundation announced that they have established the Disaster Recovery Fund (DRF) to support those negatively impacted by the tornado. The DRF provides an opportunity for the public to give with the assurance their donations will be used to quickly move resources to where they are most needed and to adapt to evolving needs.

GMCCF will first focus dollars received addressing economic needs and health challenges of those who have been affected. If needed, the long-term application of the fund will focus on additional needs that are not being met by existing non-profit, local, state and federal programs that will inevitably arise.

Community Help needed for Downtown Flower Project

Over the past several years the downtown flower project has become a jewel in the Winterset crown during the summer. The project us supported solely by donations from community members and volunteers who faithfully water the hanging baskets. This year, additional volunteers are needed to help with the watering.

The flowers get watered once daily (starting about 6:30 in order to be done by 7:30 or 7:45).  There are two routes with each route having 60 baskets.  Each volunteer (or group) is only responsible for one route and can be done by one or two people.  It takes about 1¼ hours to do the 60 baskets and refill the tank to be ready for the next day.

If you would like to volunteer to help this summer, contact Dave Trask at detrask510@aol.com.
