Weekend in Winterset • August 1

Welcome to August! For those of us with school-age kids, this turn of the calendar can bring a mix of dread—hello, back-to-school shopping—and relief at the thought of returning to a somewhat normal schedule (with other adults finally sharing the childcare duties!).

If your life is no longer ruled by the school calendar, you might still feel a bit of that seasonal shift—or maybe just joy at skipping the chaos in the Target school supply aisle!

Either way, the unofficial last weeks of summer are still packed with fun, and I’m here to share what’s happening!

Last Chance…

Tiny Pieces, Vast Visions Exhibit

Now Through August 3
Iowa Quilt Museum

This extraordinary exhibit of modern quilts is going to be at the Iowa Quilt Museum for just a few more days! I had the opportunity to see them in greater depth this past week and they are stunning. Go in with the mindset of visiting a contemporary art gallery and I promise you won’t be disappointed! And it’s RIGHT HERE in Winterset

This Weekend!

F1

August 1 & 2 • 7:00pm & August 3 • 2:00pm
The Iowa Theater

From Apple Original Films and the filmmakers from Top Gun: Maverick comes the high-octane, action-packed feature film starring Brad Pitt and directed by Joseph Kosinski. Dubbed “the greatest that never was,” Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) was FORMULA 1’s most promising phenom of the 1990s until an accident on the track nearly ended his career. Thirty years later, he’s a nomadic racer-for-hire when he’s approached by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), owner of a struggling FORMULA 1 team that is on the verge of collapse. Ruben convinces Sonny to come back to FORMULA 1 for one last shot at saving the team and being the best in the world. He’ll drive alongside Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), the team’s hotshot rookie intent on setting his own pace. But as the engines roar, Sonny’s past catches up with him and he finds that in FORMULA 1, your teammate is your fiercest competition—and the road to redemption is not something you can travel alone. Rated PG-13, 2 hr 35 min

Madison County Farmer’s Market

Saturday • August 1 • 8:00 – Noon
Courthouse Square

The cooler temps this week are making a trip to the Madison County Farmers Market feel like pure summer bliss! On your way to or from the market, swing by The Warehouse on 2nd / Graham’s Game Café for breakfast tacos, Bloody Marys, and mimosas.

You might even leave the kids (and husbands!) to play in the arcade while you shop the market in peace—now that’s a win-win.

Spaceballs

Thursday • August 7 • 7:00pm
Throwback Thursday at The Iowa Theater

The Throwback Thursday theme in August is space, and they’re starting it off with a classic (of sorts!)

In a distant galaxy, planet Spaceball has depleted its air supply, leaving its citizens reliant on a product called “Perri-Air.” In desperation, Spaceball’s leader President Skroob (Mel Brooks) orders the evil Dark Helmet (Rick Moranis) to kidnap Princess Vespa (Daphne Zuniga) of oxygen-rich Druidia and hold her hostage in exchange for air. But help arrives for the Princess in the form of renegade space pilot Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his half-man, half-dog partner, Barf (John Candy). 1987, Rated PG, 1 hr 36 min
