Throwback Thursday at The Iowa Theater
Every Thursday in August the Iowa Theater takes us to outer space!
The stars of a 1970s sci-fi show – now scraping a living through re-runs and sci-fi conventions – are beamed aboard an alien spacecraft. Believing the cast’s heroic on-screen dramas are historical documents of real-life adventures, the band of aliens turn to the ailing celebrities for help in their quest to overcome the oppressive regime in their solar system. 1999, Rated PG, 1 hr 42 min

Sunday Movie Club at the Iowa Theater
This month’s Sunday Movie Club selection is the American film “Familiar Touch,” which premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival. Billed as a coming of (old) age film, “Familiar Touch” stars Kathleen Chalfant as an octogenarian as she transitions to an assisted living facility. The movie, written, directed, and produced by Sarah Friedland, is Friedland’s feature directorial debut. The movie won numerous awards at film festivals around the country.
Principal photography took place at an actual retirement community, Villa Gardens, in Pasadena, California, with some residents appearing in the film. Residents who wished to participate first took a filmmaking workshop, made their own biographical short films, and only after everyone had been immersed in the experience, became cast and crew members.
The Sunday Movie Club is the Iowa Theater’s once-a-month screening of slightly off-the-beaten path, thought-provoking films. Similar to a book club, the screenings include an informal, optional (and brief) discussion after the credits roll.
Admission for club members is free; nonmembers are welcome to purchase an $8 ticket. Membership is $75 per year for twelve critically-acclaimed movies. For more information or to join, visit www.the-iowa.com/club.
