Also, thank you to artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II, the Green Rogers American Legion Post, the Winterset VFW Post, and all those involved in completing and dedicating the Madison County Freedom Rock project on the grounds of the John Wayne Birthplace & Museum. Larry Spencer was the guest speaker at last weekend’s well-attended dedication ceremony. He was a Lt. Colonel in the Air Force and was also a POW in North Vietnam for nearly seven years, from 1966 to 1973. He is also the only surviving POW of the four Madison County POWs that Sorensen painted on one side of the Madison County Freedom Rock.

Larry Spencer speaks as artist Bubba Sorensen listens in deep appreciation of his service to our country.

From left to right, the Madison County POWs painted on the rock are Carl Hircock (WWII), Larry Spencer, Eddie Benge (WWII), and Don Thomas (WWII). It is a treasure to the community.
