Weekend in Winterset, September 8-10

Next Saturday and Sunday, September 16 and 17, many of our community’s artists will have their creativity on full display. The annual event known as “Where Madison County Creates,” which used to be held in conjunction with the Southwest Iowa Art Tour, has now taken on a life of its own. It’s a weekend full of opportunities to see original artwork, watch live demonstrations, and even participate in making something of your own.

The official timing of the event is 10:00 to 5:00 on Saturday, the 16th, and noon to 4:00 on Sunday, the 17th, but each of the locations mentioned above will offer their own twist on the event. At 1st Avenue Collective, there will be an Art & Craft Show on the Patio where you can meet some of the artisans they work with. Pottery, woodworking, jewelry, photography, dog treats and needlework will be featured, with demonstrations and opportunities to make and take your own creations.

Angel Wings & CT will show you the art of junk angels and silverware jewelry.

b.shannon designs will have a loose gemstone sale, with various gems in every price range. You can incorporate your own inspiration in a custom design for your gem, or leave it up to Brooke to create something unique.

The Winterset Art Center will have a new gallery exhibit by artist James Given on display. Attendees can also learn about ceramics with a pottery demonstration in Studio B, and for a small fee, stay to create a piece of artwork using alcohol inks or watercolors in Studio A. Hungry for lunch? Chicken salad will be served on Saturday from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm. Your donation of $7.50 will go directly towards continued facility improvements at the Art Center.

All around town as you visit the various locations involved in “Where Madison County Creates,” you’ll see homes, businesses, and many of our popular landmarks covered in quilts. Based on an age-old tradition of hanging quilts outside to air after a long winter, the effect is a photogenic display of art in the wild. Piece Works Quilt Shop will have quilts gracing the covered bridges and more (Saturday only, with rain date of Sunday). Bring your camera! Piece Works Quilt Shop will also have demonstrations at their store, and the Iowa Quilt Museum will feature miniature barn quilt blocks.

And that’s not all! You will likely have the opportunity to participate in the creation of a public art mural. Heartland Fiber Co. will demonstrate spinning, knitting and weaving, Madhaus Gallery will show hands-on techniques in printmaking, pottery and stained glass, and there will be other participants set up in their homes and outside, such as Sunlight Harvest (alpaca yarn wool crafts) and Handy Thompson (woodworking) on the courthouse lawn. Bring a friend and make the rounds, because there’s something there for everyone.

This Weekend
