Weekend in Winterset, April 26-29, 2018

The Iowa Quilt Museum will host a community-wide event this Saturday, April 28th. The Madison County Airing of the Quilts takes place from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm and will include well over a hundred quilts around the community in over fifteen unique displays. Many of the displays will be free including Roseman, Holliwell, Hogback and Cutler-Donahoe bridges, the Madison County courthouse (inside and on the porticos) and the Winterset Public library. Tickets can also be purchased for $20 to allow entry into additional displays: a tour of four historic homes, quilt shows at three local churches, the upstairs gallery at Piece Works Quilt Shop, the Madison County Historical Museum’s Zion Church and the Iowa Quilt Museum. Community members are also encouraged to hang quilts out at their homes or businesses on Saturday. A few of our downtown stores are already set for the event.

At 4:30, the IQM will host a cocktail reception and an “Out of Control” Trunk Show. Quilt historians Barbara Brackman & Deb Rowden from Lawrence, Kansas, will share a few quilts from their collection of unique quilts that will leave us wondering, “What was she thinking?” Tickets are $10 for the reception and trunk show.

The day will conclude with a fundraising dinner and live quilt auction at the First United Presbyterian Church (210 W Green St.) at 5:30 pm. Tickets to the dinner and auction are $35. A $40 ticket is also available which includes the cocktail reception/trunk show AND the dinner/auction. For more information on all of these events or to order tickets, visit the Iowa Quilt Museum website or call the IQM at 515-462-5988.

Coming Soon

A long-standing community event is the May Day Breakfast hosted by the women of the First United Presbyterian Church (210 W Green St.) on Tuesday, May 1st. Breakfast is served from 6:30 to 9:30 am and guests can eat at the church or take their breakfast to go. The cost is $6 and proceeds go toward the missions of the Presbyterian Women.

The Madison County Historical Museum will open for the season on May 1st. We’ve often found that us locals don’t always take full advantage of the gems in our community. If you’ve never visited the Madison County Historical Museum complex, we encourage you to add it to your spring and summer list.

This following is taken from the MCHS website:

From its humble beginning in 1904, the Madison County Historical Society has developed into a complex which includes 14 buildings located on 18 picturesque acres on the south edge of Winterset. The crown jewel of the complex is the 1856 Bevington-Kaser house constructed by C.D. “Doc” Bevington. It has been restored and furnished in Victorian richness. Our collections include rocks, fossils, Native American artifacts, Civil War and military items, quilts, glassware, local business memorabilia, household and domestic items, early farm machinery and technology, tools and barbed wire, and a research library.

On Sunday, May 6th, the Madison County Historical Society will start their annual meeting with a program titled George Washington Carver: Local Influences. It will include a video produced by the National Park Service’s George Washington Carver National Landmark in Diamond, Missouri for an overview of Carver’s life and accomplishments. Then Director Jared McDonald will follow with his visual presentation of locations and people who Carver encountered in Winterset and Madison County. The program is free and open to the public and will be held at the historical museum at 1:00 pm. Doors will open at 12:30. Following the program and refreshments, Society members will conduct their annual business meeting. Memberships to the Madison County Historical Society may be purchased at the event.

Much has been written about George Washington Carver. His life was one of discovery, science, art, and service to his fellow man. He’s most often associated with his over 300 uses of the peanut that helped diversify farming in the South. He taught over 40 years at Tuskegee University in Alabama and also carried his message beyond the college walls with brochures, traveling exhibits, and lectures throughout the world. But he was also a deeply religious humanitarian who felt his earthly mission from God was to serve the fellow members of his race. Carver’s time in Winterset, about two years while he was in his mid-twenties, is often only a paragraph to a page or two in the many books written about his life. But local research from his letters to Madison County acquaintances, historic maps, and local newspapers at that time have made the facts come together in a more cohesive story of his years here.

Farmers & Merchants State Bank is offering a free community shred day on Saturday, May 5th, from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. If you’ve got some documents that you’re ready to get rid of, this is a secure way to do so.

Business owners take note of this Grow Your Business Workshop being hosted by ProTeam Insurance & Clanton Creek Oils and Herbs on Tuesday, May 8th, from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. Registration deadline is May 1st.

Finally

Wellness Wednesdays in Winterset is a new initiative in our community and consists of a series of fun and informational weekly programming related to health and wellness opportunities in our community. The events will take place on Wednesdays in May through October. All events are free and open to the public although some events will request pre-registration.

Each week of the month will have a different theme:

First Wednesdays – Walk Around the Clock
Second Wednesdays – Lunch and Learns
Third Wednesdays – Focus on Fitness
Fourth Wednesdays – Well Mind Wednesdays

Programming is provided by a committee of volunteers from organizations invested in the wellness of our community. These organizations include Madison County Health Care System, Winterset Public Library, Madison County Conservation Board, Winterset Parks and Recreation, Madison County Public Health, Winterset Art Center, Montross Pharmacy, Genesis Development, HyVee, and Fareway.

The first event this year is Walk around the Clock on Wednesday, May 2nd, from Noon to 1:00 pm. Join other walkers to enjoy some fresh air, exercise, and some big band music coming from the town square speakers. A different musical genre will be featured each month.

You can find a complete listing of Wellness Wednesdays in Winterset events by following their Facebook page.
