Weekend in Winterset, May 24th – 28th, 2018

This Weekend

Memorial Day Weekend is always an extra-special time in Winterset as we celebrate the birthday of The Duke here in the place where he was born. We’re welcoming the John Wayne Birthplace Museum this week as sponsors of The Winterset Citizen. They have a great celebration planned this weekend!

The celebration kicks off on Friday evening, May 25th, with a screening of Red River (see more about all the films being shown this weekend later in the post) and the Country Barn Dance featuring Chad Elliot. Kick up your heels from 8:00 pm to Midnight in the Jackson Building at the Madison County Fairgrounds for just $8 per person.

On Saturday, May 26th, start the day with Breakfast at the Firehouse from 6:00 – 11:00 am. Cost is $8 per person, children 3 and under are free.

When you’re full of pancakes, waddle over to the John Wayne Birthplace museum to cheer on the participants in the 5K Run/Walk. The race begins at 9:00 at the museum and ends at the same place. If you want to participate, you can still register on Saturday morning.

After you cheer for the race finish, find a spot along the parade route for the Horse Parade. The route begins at the Madison County Fairgrounds, travels up 8th Avenue to Court Ave before heading East.

The remainder of the weekend is filled with two more film presentations, Wild Goose and Big Jake, and the Museum Benefit Dinner & Auction. Plus, if you’ve never taken the opportunity to actually visit the John Wayne Birthplace Museum, this will be an exciting weekend to do it.

In addition to all the John Wayne films, you have three more chances to catch Avengers: Infinity War (PG-13)this weekend: Thursday, May 24th, at 7:00 pm, Saturday, May 26th, at 4:00 pm, and Sunday, May 27th, at 2:00 pm.

Actor, musician and poet, Red Steagall, will make a special appearance at The Iowa on Friday, May 25th, at 6:00 pm, prior to the screening of Red River. On Saturday, May 26th, at 2:00 pm, viewers can get a intimate look at John Wayne through John Wayne: on Board with the Duke, a collection of home movies taken aboard his yacht, the Wild Goose, a converted minesweeper. Tickets for this presentation are just $5. And on Saturday, May 26th, at 8:30 pm, catch the 1971 film Big Jake.

On Saturday, May 26th, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm, enjoy a fun evening with locally made hard apple cider at the Winterset Cidery, delicious BBQ flavors by Up in Smoke, and great music by Brick ‘n Bob DuoNo, they aren’t a law firm or domestic partners, they are a great party band from Central Iowa playing everything from classic rock to rocking country, and tasty blues to originals.

On Monday, May 28th, Memorial Day, the streets of Winterset will be lined with flags thanks to the Winterset Lions, Winterset Optimists and the local troops of the Boy Scouts of America. Help celebrate and honor the occasion by attending the Memorial Day Parade at 10:00 followed by the Memorial Day Ceremony at the Winterset Cemetery (approximately 10:30 am). The parade, which will be led by the Winterset HS Marching Huskies, will start at the Legion Hall located at 1st Avenue and Green St before proceeding East toward the cemetery. At the Memorial Day Ceremony, twelve local veterans will be awarded Quilts of Valor. In case of rain, the ceremony will be held in Henry C. Miller Auditorium at Winterset High School instead.
