American Legion Veterans Ball

Friday • 3/29 • 5:00 – 9:00 pm
Jackson Building at the Fairgrounds

Winterset’s American Legion is celebrating their 100th Anniversary with a Veterans Ball this Friday night. The evening includes a social hour, dinner and dance as well as a silent & live auction. Dress will be semi-formal or military dress. Tickets will be $25 at the door. In addition to celebrating and honoring our local veterans, funds from the ball will be put toward renovation and updating at the Legion Hall.


Winterset Knights of Columbus Fish Fry

Each Friday during Lent • through April 12 • 5:30 – 7:00 pm
St. Joseph Catholic Church

The ALL YOU CAN EAT fish fry feast continues Friday night at St. Joseph Catholic Church. The price is $10 for adults, $5 for kids 12 and under and there are family rates available. If the kids aren’t into fish, there are other options including cheese pizza from Pizza Ranch.


Spring Wildflowers in Madison County

Winterset Public Library with Madison County Conservation Board

Our Madison County countryside is beautiful – especially in the Spring! On Saturday, March 30th, Amy Warnke, Naturalist with Madison County Parks, will share a photo presentation of the many wildflowers around the county and where to find them. No registration needed for this class which is free and open to everyone at the Winterset Public Library.


World Premiere of “Stout Hearted” George Stout and the Guardians of Art

Born in Winterset, Iowa, George Stout served in both WW1 and WW2. During WW 2, Stout led the Monuments Men through Europe on the greatest treasure hunt in history—protecting and recovering priceless art from the Nazis. Stout’s legacy with The Monuments Men continues today with the U.S. Committee of the Blue Shield, an organization that is protecting precious art from destruction in areas of global conflict. Stout’s innovative methods of art conservation, created some 90 years ago, are still used today in major museums around the world.

The world premier of the documentary about this hero and his legendary work is happening right here in Winterset at the Iowa Theater with two screenings: Saturday, March 30th, at 7:00pm and Sunday, March 31st, and 3:00 pm. At the red-carpet event on Saturday, you can also meet Emmy-winning film-makers Kevin Kelley & Marie Wilkes from New Mile Media Arts in Iowa City and converse with George Stout’s family. A champagne reception will be hosted at Northside Cafe at 8:45 pm, with George Stout’s own artworks on display. The $16 ticket price includes the movie screening, a complementary beverage, the Q&A, and champagne reception. Tickets for the Sunday screening are $10. Live Music with Jana West & RetroSpect

Covered Bridges Winery

Join Abby Normal’s Tim and Jana West and Park Mikels with this new band, for a performance of 70s radio hits. There is a $5 cover and Roadside Tacos will be serving food from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. The music starts at 7:00 pm.

Isn’t it great to be a part of a community of caring businesses? Did you know that Angie Day and Stephanie Gerleman from FMSB recently volunteered at Iowa Public Television answering pledge calls. Nineteen Iowa Bankers raised $37,599 from 166 pledges that night!


Basics of Drawing Class

Tuesdays & Thursdays • April 2nd – 18th • 3:45 – 4:45pm*
Winterset Art Center

This six-session class on basic drawing will help students learn how to work with perspective, foreshortening, light, and shading. The class will block in the composition of a simple still life, block in the boundaries of the composition and have a finished still life to take home. It is recommended for ages 12 and up. Cost is $40 for WAC members and $45 for non-members. Class size is limited so register at THIS LINK. *The first class will meet from 3:45 – 5:15, all other sessions will end at 4:45.


AARP Fraud Watch

We all know that scammers are out there but it’s sometimes hard to know what’s a scam and what’s legitimate. Get the latest information about scams happening locally and across the country, and learn about ways to protect yourself from fraud and abuse. No registration is needed. This event is free and open to the public.


70th Annual Lions Club Show

Winterset Lions Club will be presenting their 70th Annual Lions Show next week! Shows start at 7:00pm on April 4th & 5th in Miller Auditorium at Winterset High School. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children and can be found at American State Bank, Ben Franklin, Covered Bridge Realty, Fareway, F&M Bank, Hy-Vee, Montross Pharmacy, Northside Barbershop, and Union State Bank. This community variety show features music of all types, dancing, and even some comedy! You can’t really say you’re a part of the Winterset community until you’ve attended the Lions Show 🙂

Understanding Your Grief Support Group

This support group is being offered by Madison County Health Care System & EveryStep Grief & Loss Services for those who have suffered the loss of a family member or friend and are seeking support and education on their journey through grief. Our Faith in Film Series

April 10th – 13th
The Iowa Theater

 

Several Winterset churches are working together to provide the community with an uplifting film experience the week prior to Easter. Films will be shown Wednesday, April 10th, through Friday, April 12th, at 7:00pm and Saturday, April 13th, at 1:00pm. Admission is free to the public with a goodwill donation of canned goods, paper products, personal care items or a monetary donation to either CRISP, MATURA, or the St. Paul Furniture Ministry.

Bolt for the Heart 5K Run/Walk

Saturday • 4/20 • 9:00 am

The Madison County Leadership Class of 2019 is sponsoring a 5K Run/Walk in April.   They are raising funds to supply the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, the Winterset Police Department & the Earlham Police Department with AED’s to be placed in each of their patrol cars. Registration forms can be found in the Shopper or you can register online HERE. Registration fee is $30 if you register in advance $35 the day of the race. T-shirts will be provided for each registrant paid before April 5th, so don’t wait and get that COOL swag!
