Learn the stories of the ground breaking men and women who served at Fort Des Moines next Tuesday at the Winterset Public Library. In 1917, Fort Des Moines hosted the first Officer Training Camp for Black men in United States history. Seen as an experiment, the men who came to Fort Des Moines proved their capabilities as officers and leaders for our country. Three decades later, Fort Des Moines was the site of a second Civil Rights milestone as host to the first Officer Training Camp for women in United States history.

Spend a beautiful evening under the stars in Pammel State Park while attending this year’s Evening Under the Stars Fundraiser to benefit the Madison County Conservation Board. The fundraiser is held by MCFEE, the conservation board foundation, and all proceeds benefit Madison County Parks through habitat enhancements, environmental education, park infrastructure improvements, and more.
5:00 pm – Doors Open, Social Hour with Local Wines
6:30 pm – Catered BBQ meal by Off The Griddle & Madison County Pork Producers
7:30 pm – Live Auction

The Madison County Foundation for Environmental Education, is also hosting an online auction on their Facebook page. The online auction bidding will open at 7:00am on September 7, and close at 11:59 PM on September 9. All bidding will be done by commenting your bid amount on the posted items. Our staff will monitor the bidding process and winners will be notified after closing.
