Weekend in Winterset • August 17

Tonight

Winterset Neighbors Connection

Thursday • August 17 • 7:00pm
Winterset Public Library

Do you have to be a Farmer to sell at the Farmers Market? Can you only sell produce at the Farmers Market? Where, and when, is the Farmers Market in Winterset? Join the discussion this evening at 7:00pm at the Winterset Public Library at the Neighbors Connection. meeting where Donna Carey, the Market Master, will share details about this great weekly event held throughout the summer and into the fall.

The Neighbors Connection is patterned after the Newcomer Clubs, but not limited to newcomers. The group meets monthly to give people an opportunity to meet others and learn about the community of Madison County. It’s free of charge and refreshments are always served. There is no motive, other than to provide an opportunity to answer questions residents might have about Madison County.  For more information contact Chris Baumgarn at the library, 515.462.1731.

Parallel Mothers

Sunday • August 20 • 5:30pm
Sunday Movie Club at the Iowa Theater

The Sunday Movie Club was launched in September 2022 as a way to offer Iowa Theater patrons opportunities to watch recent, critically-acclaimed films that are slightly outside The Iowa’s usual mainstream fare. Members pay an annual fee of $75, which works out to $6.25 per movie, but anyone can attend the screenings by buying an $8 ticket. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the movie starts at 5:30.

This month’s club selection is “Parallel Mothers,” a 2021 film written and directed by acclaimed Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar. It stars Penelope Cruz and Milena Smit as unmarried women (both unintentionally pregnant) who give birth at the same hospital on the same day. One is middle aged and overjoyed; the other is a frightened teenager. The mothers stay in touch and wind up bonding in a most unusual way. Cruz was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Sunday Movie Club screenings include a brief, optional discussion following the film.
