20,000 Species of Bees
Sunday • September 15 • 5:30pm
Sunday Movie Club at the Iowa Theater
During a summer in a village house linked to beekeeping, an eight-year-old girl and her mother experience revelations that will change their lives forever. The mother, Ane, who is in the midst of a professional and personal crisis, takes her three children on holiday to a house where her mother and aunt live. Coco, the eight-year-old, does not fit in with the rest of the group and does not understand why.
“20,000 Species of Bees,” a Spanish film that premiered last year at the Berlin Film Festival screens Sunday, September 22, at the Iowa Theater. Doors open at 5 p.m. The movie starts at 5:30. Total running time is two hours, eight minutes.
The review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes offered this about the film: “Led by young Sofia Otero’s outstanding performance, the movie explores an array of weighty themes with gentle humanity.” Another reviewer said, “Sofia Otero is outstanding for a 10-year-old. So are the actors playing the characters of Mom and Grandma Aunt.”
The screening of this film is part of the Iowa Theater’s Sunday Movie Club, which offers once-a-month opportunities to view critically acclaimed, thought-provoking films. Membership is $75 per year for the 12-movie series, but anyone can attend by purchasing a ticket for $8. Movie Club screenings include a brief, optional discussion following the credit roll. The book-club-like conversations are variously facilitated by theater staff, board members, and club members.
