In 18th century Denmark, Captain Ludvig Kahlen (Mads Mikkelsen)—a proud, ambitious, but impoverished war hero—sets out to tame a vast, uninhabitable land on which seemingly nothing can grow. He seeks to start farming crops, build a colony in the name of the King, and gain a noble title for himself. This beautiful but forbidding area also happens to be under the rule of the merciless Frederik De Schinkel, a preening nobleman who realizes the threat Kahlen represents to his power. Struggling against the elements and local brigands, Kahlen is joined by a couple who have fled the clutches of the rapacious De Schinkel. As this group of misfits begins to build a small community in this inhospitable place, De Schinkel swears vengeance, and the confrontation between him and Kahlen promises to be as violent and intense as these two men.
The 2023 film is in Danish, Swedish, German, & Norwegian with English subtitles. Total running time is 2 hr 7 min.
The screening is part of the Iowa Theater’s Sunday Movie Club, which offers once-a-month opportunities to view thought-provoking films. Membership costs $75 per year for the 12-movie series, but anyone can attend by purchasing a ticket for $8. Sunday Movie Club screenings include a brief, optional discussion following the credit roll. The book-club-like conversations are variously facilitated by theater staff, board members, and club members.

Auditions for: The Enchanted Bookshop

The Winterset Stage at Madison County Music Co.
The Winterset Stage will hold auditions for their next play, The Enchanted Bookshop, on August 27th and 28th. Actors do not need to prepare anything; readings will be provided at auditions and they welcome actors of ALL experience levels—even beginners! In fact, they love welcoming newbies to the stage (either new to the theater, new to the community, or both!)
During the day, A Likely Story may look like any other used bookstore. But at night, it’s a place where magic happens. That’s when the characters inside the books come alive.
Six of those characters—Dorothy Gale, Robin Hood, Pollyanna, Sherlock Holmes, Heidi, and Tom Sawyer—long to help Margie, the scatterbrained owner, save her struggling store. But they’re not allowed to leave the building or be seen by human eyes. So when a pair of smugglers comes looking for a stolen necklace hidden inside one of the books, the characters are torn. Should they warn Margie and risk disappearing forever? Or can they find a way to defeat the crooks without being seen?
Featuring additional appearances by such beloved literary characters as the Queen of Hearts, Long John Silver, and Doctor Dolittle, this charming comedy celebrates the joy of reading in a fresh, fun-filled way.
