Past Lives

Sunday • November 19 • 5:30pm
Sunday Movie Club at The Iowa Theater

The movie “Past Lives” premiered in January this year at the Sundance Film Festival. A surprise hit from a first-time director, the film opened in only four theaters but within six weeks had grossed over $8 million. The film follows the relationship between two childhood friends over the course of 24 years as they grow apart and live different lives. Praised by both audiences and film critics, one reviewer wrote, “Past Lives” is a glorious date movie . . . a movie for every occasion.”

The principal characters, Nora and Hae Sung, are close friends as adolescents in Korea. When Nora’s family emigrates to Toronto, the young people lose contact. Twelve years later, at 24, they rediscover each other on Facebook, but are unable to get together. Another twelve years go by, and Nora is married and living in New York. Hae Sung is single, and the old friends are finally reunited. The question the film raises, “What if . . . ?” is one many people ask themselves as they lead their lives, choose one path over another, one relationship over another.

Sunday’s screening is part of the Iowa Theater’s “Sunday Movie Club” series, which offers a thought-provoking, outside-the-mainstream film once a month on the third Sunday. Doors open at 5:00, with a start time of 5:30. The running time for “Past Lives” is one hour, forty-five minutes. The film is in English, with some (subtitled) Korean. Viewers are invited to hang around after the credits roll to share their thoughts about the film during a brief, optional discussion. The Iowa Theater’s programmer Rebecca Fons will be in Winterset for this month’s screening and will facilitate the discussion.
