The sound of one of our favorite summer pastimes will soon be filling the air with the return of the Winterset Community Band Summer Concert Series. This volunteer group of community musicians will hold weekly concerts on Thursdays evenings June 1st through July 13th (no concert on July 6). Dinner or dessert will be served each week at 6:00 by local community groups and intermissions will feature additional entertainment. This week, the Madison County Historical Society will be serving Beef burgers as a fundraiser for the Passport to the Past activities. Jennie and David Hargrove will the the intermission entertainment.

Iowa Quilt Festival: Airing of the Quilts

Iowa Quilt Museum & Around
The Iowa Quilt Festival concludes this Saturday with the “Airing of the Quilts” Finale. Quilts will be on display in 16 locations around town PLUS the Covered Bridges Quilt Guild Show that is open both Friday, June 2, and Saturday, June 3. To view the quilts, purchase a $20 ticket at the Iowa Quilt Museum on Saturday morning, then spend the day meandering around our idyllic community. Quilts will be displayed in five of the covered bridges, two churches, Monumental Park, and many more locations! Even if you’re not a quilter, I’m willing to bed you’ll enjoy visiting (or revisiting) some of our county’s most famous landmarks and this totally unique outdoor quilt display.
Residents are also encouraged to become part of the community-wide festival by displaying quilts outdoors at their homes and businesses on Saturday, June 3rd. I always hang some from the railing of my deck but you could also hang them on a clothesline, lay them in your patio furniture, etc.

Bye Bye Birdie

The Winterset Stage at Henry C. Miller Auditorium, Winterset HS
Tickets are now on sale for The Winterset Stage’s summer community musical. Bye Bye Birdie is a loving send-up of the 1950s, small town America, teenagers, and rock & roll! Teen heartthrob Conrad Birdie has been drafted, so he chooses All-American girl Kim MacAfee for a very public farewell kiss.
Birdie features a tuneful high-energy score and a hilarious script, and with a cast of nearly 50 talented community members, you’re almost guaranteed to know someone on the stage. Performances of this production will take place in Henry C. Miller Auditorium at Winterset High School and tickets are $15.
