Last Chance

These ARE Your Grandmother’s Quilts

Exhibit closes Sunday, March 12
Iowa Quilt Museum

One of the aims of the Iowa Quilt Museum is to bring to the light the current contributors to the art of quilting, some of whom are quite modern in the approach to fiber arts. Sometimes the phrase, “these aren’t your grandmother’s quilts” is used to draw attention to the more contemporary aspects of quilting arts. However, the current exhibit at the is, quite literally, grandmother’s quilts!

The exhibit, in memory of long-time Winterset Quilter Velma Van Scoy, showcases the quilts and stories of 27 of today’s and yesterday’s grandmothers. You’ll see a variety of quilts—a few modern, many more vintage and traditional—and many photos of the creative women who stitched them. Most importantly, you’ll feel the love the grandmothers have passed along to their families and the quilting legacy they’ve inspired and influenced.

This exhibit closes on Sunday, March 12th, at 4:00pm, so this weekend is your last opportunity to see it. The IQM is open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10:00 to 4:00, and Sunday from Noon to 4:00.

Money Pit

Wednesday • March 15 • 7:00pm
Way Back Wednesday at the Iowa Theater

Half off popcorn on Way Back Wednesday!

Young lovers Walter (Tom Hanks) and Anna (Shelley Long) are house-sitting the New York City apartment owned by Max (Alexander Godunov), Anna’s ex-husband, who suddenly decides to toss them out. Needing a new home, they settle on buying a country estate outside the city, which is available for a suspiciously low price. It soon becomes apparent why, as doors fall off their hinges, staircases come tumbling down and a bathtub falls through the floor. The couple’s relationship suffers similarly. 1986, Rated PG, 1 hr, 31 min

Winterset Neighbors Connection

Thursday • March 16 • 7:00pm
Winterset Public Library

The Winterset Neighbors Connection is a free gathering of new, and not-so-newcomers to the Winterset area. Meeting monthly (usually at 7:00 pm at the Library) they get together to enjoy meeting new people, developing friendships and learning about Madison County.

The uncooperative weather of the past couple of months resulted in the Winterset Neighbors Connection to reschedule one program and combine two programs for their March meeting. Join them (weather permitting) next week at Covered Bridges Winery, located about 5 miles north of Winterset at 2207 170th Trail, just off of Hwy 169. Award winning Vintner Kevin Fifo will give a tour of the winery and explain how Covered Bridges Winery has continued to be one of the top award-winning wineries in the state of Iowa. Kevin was recently named the Vintner of the year in Iowa. Learn how their wines have routinely been singled out for their quality.

Additionally, on “St. Patrick’s Day eve” Brian Downes, our “unofficial Leprechaun” will share his many experiences in Ireland. One of the most well-known films of native son, John Wayne, was “The Quiet Man,” filmed in Ireland. Downes has made over 25 visits to his roots in Ireland and has created friendships with many, resulting in the Birthplace and Museum prominently displaying artifacts from the film.

The program originally scheduled for January will be presented by David Hargrove, Director of Winterset Public Library on Thursday, April 20, at 7:00 pm at the library. For more information about any of these programs, contact Chris Baumgarn at the Library at 515.462.1731.

Beer Choir

Friday • March 17th • 7:00pm
The Drift with Madison County Music Co.

Beer Choir is a social singing event open to all, no talent required! It’s so simple—you get a beverage, get a seat, and let yourself be led through a couple hours of hilarious drinking songs from the official songbook, the Beer Choir Hymnal! This time around, the choir will be calling on the Irish faeries and their best auld tunes. Wear green if you don’t want to be pinched!

Non-beer drinkers are also welcome—The Drift has a selection of wines, cocktails, appetizers and soft drinks. And if you just want to drink and listen, you’re welcome, too, but don’t be surprised when you end up joining in the singing! There is no cover charge.
