Something New on the Horizon

Sunday Movie Club

Third Sunday of Each Month
The Iowa Theater

Winterset’s Iowa Theater is launching a special, once-a-month film series designed to offer movie fans a viewing experience
a bit different from the theater’s usual fare.
“Throughout the year, I choose movies that I hope will appeal to a broad swath of our
community’s population,” said Rebecca Fons, The Iowa’s program director. “Movies like THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, AMERICAN UNDERDOG, or TOP GUN: MAVERICK, do very well at our box office, but there are other, less mainstream films out there that are well worth watching—including recent Oscar nominees that are somewhat off the beaten path. People in our community may have missed them either because the movie ran in Des Moines briefly—or not at all—or because folks didn’t want to drive to Des Moines or another town to see them.”

The Sunday Movie club is the brainchild of Rebecca, board member Marianne Fons, and theater manager Scott Smith. Screenings will be at 5:30 on the third Sunday of each month, with doors opening at 5 p.m. Membership is $75 per year per person, which is $6.25 per film. The one-year membership can start any time. The general public also may attend, but nonmember tickets are $8. Each member gets a punch card, a high-quality Iowa Theater logo canvas tote, and reserved seating for 12 movies over a 12-month period. Members’ punch cards stay on file at the theater and are punched when members arrive for a screening. Members can gift their punch to a nonmember friend if they can’t attend themselves. A short, lively moderated conversation will follow each film.

“Scott, Rebecca, and I collaborated on the first few months’ selections,” Marianne Fons said, “and decided to book September through December to start with. We want the club to take shape based on feedback from its members.” Scheduled so far are: THE POWER OF THE DOG (September 18), PARASITE (October 16), BELFAST (November 20), and ANOTHER ROUND (December 18).

According to Rebecca, “Future choices might be older films a bit too offbeat for The Iowa’s Way Back Wednesday series, must-see documentaries people missed, or iconic art-house treasures that would be fun to watch on the big screen and briefly discuss afterwards.“

Scott and Marianne will sometimes serve as post-movie moderators, and Rebecca intends to travel to Winterset from Chicago to help out several times a year. As the club evolves, its members may also be invited to co-moderate. Discussions will last no more than thirty minutes. “Don’t worry,” Scott said, “If you live in Winterset, you’ll be home by nine o’clock!”

Join the Sunday Movie Club at the Iowa Theater before, after, or during regular screenings Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights, or Sunday before, during, or after the 2 p.m. matinee. Join online at www.The-Iowa.com/club. Individual, nonmember tickets can also be purchased online. Members don’t need to print a receipt or ticket. Their names will be on the guest list at the box office or concession stand when they arrive.

The Iowa Theater is a 501c3 nonprofit, operated by a paid staff and overseen by a non-paid board of directors. The theater is the home of The Winterset Stage, Madison County’s live community theater group, also a nonprofit.
