Gallery Walk with Marti Michell

Friday • July 22 • 6:00pm Reception, 7:00pm Gallery Walk
Iowa Quilt Museum

Tickets for Thursday’s Trunk Show with Marti Michell are sold out, but you can still attend the Gallery Walk on Friday at 7:00, and the reception before hand at 6:00pm. Tickets to the Gallery Walk are $10 and can be purchased at the door.

In 1979, Marti Michell and Mary Ellen Hopkins invented the acrylic ruler that nearly all quilters rely on while cutting with the rotary cutter, which was also created in 1979.

A few months after the rotary cutter was introduced in the United States, I met Mary Ellen Hopkins at her shop. I had already developed some strip techniques of my own using scissors, however, Mary Ellen had a great idea. She was having someone cut acrylic strips in varying widths, so she could use a pencil to mark the fabric and then cut strips with scissors. We hit it off immediately. Her approach certainly matched my thinking that we needed ideas that would allow people to make five to ten quilts a year, not one quilt every five to ten years. I asked Mary Ellen if she had ever tried the rotary cutter against the acrylic strip, and she hadn’t. That night, we did, and patchwork has never been the same!

Marti Michell’s “Scrapbook”

Needless to say, Marti Michell has had a tremendous impact on the art and industry of quilting. Marianne Fons even credits Marti with giving her and Liz Porter their ‘break’ by publishing their first book. Marti’s contributions changed the face of quilting in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Elvis

July 22 & 23 • 7:00pm, July 24 • 2:00pm
The Iowa Theater

ELVIS is an epic, big-screen spectacle from Warner Bros. Pictures and visionary, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Baz Luhrmann that explores the life and music of Elvis Presley, starring Austin Butler and Oscar winner Tom Hanks. A thoroughly cinematic drama, Elvis’s (Butler) story is seen through the prism of his complicated relationship with his enigmatic manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Hanks). As told by Parker, the film delves into the complex dynamic between the two spanning over 20 years, from Presley’s rise to fame to his unprecedented stardom, against the backdrop of the evolving cultural landscape and loss of innocence in America. Central to that journey is one of the significant and influential people in Elvis’s life, Priscilla Presley (Olivia DeJonge). PG-13, 2hr 39 min
