This Weekend

Spiderman: No Way Home

Friday & Saturday at 7:00pm, Sunday at 2:00pm
The Iowa Theater

This weekend offers you one more chance to see Spider-Man! And if movies from the 90s are “Way Back,” that must mean I’m getting old!

For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero’s identity is revealed, bringing his Super Hero responsibilities into conflict with his normal life and putting those he cares about most at risk. When he enlists Doctor Strange’s help to restore his secret, the spell tears a hole in their world, releasing the most powerful villains who’ve ever fought a Spider-Man in any universe. Now, Peter will have to overcome his greatest challenge yet, which will not only forever alter his own future but the future of the Multiverse. PG-13, 2hr 28 min

Haiku Workshop

Saturday • January 29th • 10:00am
Winterset Public Library

This workshop, conducted by award-winning author Dennis Maulsby, will examine how these popular short poems (three lines or less) generate an ‘aha’ response from readers.

In a relaxed group setting, participants will learn about haiku and some of its many variations, discovering how these short forms create the poetic moment. No poetic or writing background is required. The material is structured for both beginners and those wishing to improve their grasp of the form. Participants will take home a workbook of handouts and reference materials. Following the Haiku workshop, Dennis will read short selections from his books which will be available for sale.

Dennis Maulsby is a retired bank president and military veteran living in Ames, Iowa. His poems and short stories have appeared in numerous literary magazines and on National Public Radio. Maulsby’s book of war poetry, Near Death/Near Life, and a book of short stories, Free Fire Zone, both published by Prolific Press, won a gold medal award and a silver medal, respectively, from the Military Writers Society of America. His short story book, Winterset, Stories of Pixies, Demons, and Fiends, was released in 2019 by NeoLeaf Press and received an Eric Hoffer winner award and a Global Ebook gold medal award.

Contact the Library at 515-462-1731 to register for this workshop.

Ongoing Opportunties

Deeds Not Words:
Celebrating 100 Years of Women’s Suffrage

New Exhibit at the Iowa Quilt Museum

The Iowa Quilt Museum installed a new exhibit this past Monday and it’s a really unique experience!

Twenty-eight award-winning artists from across the United States have created new works to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution, granting women the right to vote.

The subjects chosen by the artists reflect the national scope and history of the nearly eighty-year fight for votes for women. Viewed through the lens of contemporary events, the works created for this exhibition are an especially poignant reminder that the act of voting is essential to American democracy.

This exhibit has been traveling across the United States since early 2020 and has been on display in the nation’s top quilt museums. This will be the collection’s last exhibition before the pieces are returned to the artists and it’s right here in our town…how cool is that?!
