Weekend in Winterset • August 7

I have a conflicted relationship with the month of August. After 17 years as a student, 10 years as a teacher, and now as a mother, August always signals “Back to School.” Which is great…mostly. I loved school as a student. I loved my job as a teacher. And I love the feeling of new beginnings or fresh starts that comes with a new school year. But there’s always a little sense of loss that comes with the shortening days, the last trip to the swimming pool, the final campout of the season, and bidding adieu to the sense of carefree freedom that seems an exclusive perk of summer.

Tomorrow, my family and I leave for a short tip to visit friends and squeeze one more experience out of the final days of summer. The day after we return, my husband reports for duty for his 10th year at Winterset High School as choir director, and 10 days after that, I’ll drop my children off for their first day of school. (One of them at the Junior High. Gasp!) Time marches on and there’s nothing I can do to stop it—just enjoy it as it happens.

The Madison County Historical Complex invites you to celebrate ‘back to school’ with a visit to their one room schoolhouse (at the historical complex) or the Bennett-North River Schoolhouse (you need to make an appointment for this one.) This might be the perfect way to squeeze a few more ‘summer-like’ experiences out of these next two weeks while also celebrating the ‘back to school’ nature of this time of year!

Winterset Aquatic Center

The Winterset Aquatic Center will close for the season on Sunday, August 15th, at 6:00pm. This is always a little sad because it signals that summer is coming to an end. It IS, however, great news for pups that like the swim because it’s finally their turn to take a dip! Bring your dog to the aquatic center on Monday, August 16th, for the annual Doggie Dip: 6:00 – 6:45 pm for small dogs under 30lbs, and 7:00-7:45 pm for dogs 31lbs and larger. The cost is $4.00 per dog and please note that people are not allowed in the water at the same time as the dogs.
