Weekend in Winterset • August 13

One Week until “Back to School”

It’s fairly typical that the early August editions of The Winterset Citizen don’t contain quite as many activities we’ve been listing the past few months. It seems that most of us are trying to squeeze in one last trip here or there. At WHS, fall sports teams, the marching band and cheerleaders are starting to meet in preparation for their season openers in just a few weeks. Families are also turning their focus to getting that school routine established again.

So, I’m going to start today’s post with some activities that you may want to consider for this fall or school year. If you don’t have kids of your own at home anymore, consider sharing this post with friends, relatives, neighbors, coworkers, etc. We’re so fortunate to be in a community that offers so many opportunities for our young people. My goal with these posts is to help spread the word of all of these options so that every Winterset Citizen can find something that they enjoy.

Let’s start with something that’s (kind of) new to town!

Madison County Music Co.

Music Instruction for ALL Ages!

Madison County Music Co. is a partnership between Elizabeth Hoenig and Megan Barrett (yes, that’s me). Elizabeth founded Madison County Music Co. in 2020 offering private piano and flute instruction. In addition to those instruments, the studio is now also offering private instruction in voice, and small group guitar instruction. (We are also working diligently to be able to provide violin, viola and cello lessons, but those arrangements aren’t yet finalized.)

Madison County Music Co. is also partnering with the Winterset Public Library to offer two programs this fall: First Steps in Music and Introduction to Ukulele. First Steps in Music is an exploratory parent and child class for ages 2-5. Introduction to Ukulele is a four-week course designed for beginner players from age 7 through adult.

In addition to private and group music lessons, Madison County Music Co. is offering an adult choir ensemble. This group will meet Wednesdays at 11:00 am. Anyone from age 18 to 108 is welcome to join. Whether you’ve been singing your whole life but don’t currently have an ensemble, or you’ve always wanted to sing but have never had the opportunity, you’ll find a place here! (BTW, if you only know me as the writer of this blog, or the director of the Iowa Quilt Museum, you may not know that I started my career as choir director at Winterset High School!)

Heartland Youth Choir | Madison County Satellite

Hosted by Madison County Music Co.

Madison County Music Co. has also become the host organization for a satellite program of Heartland Youth Choir which is based in Des Moines. Heartland Youth Choir was established in 2003 and is a performance-based program that allows children to explore an interest in vocal music beyond their school setting. Along the way, the singers participate in outstanding performances, diverse learning, and opportunities for tons of fun and making new friends! The satellite program here in Madison County will offer three ensembles:

Canto • 1st and 2nd Grade • Mondays 3:40 – 4:20
Cantilena • 3rd – 5th Grade • Wednesdays 3:40 – 4:40
Cantemus • 6th – 8th Grade • Mondays 4:30 – 5:45

All children who enjoy singing and making music are welcome to join the Heartland Youth Choir Madison County Satellite program!

These events are always free and anyone is welcome to attend. You are welcome to bring your lunch with you and literally lunch while you learn.

Movie in the Park

Friday • August 20 • Dusk
Winterset City Park North Shelter

Next Friday will be the final outdoor movie of the year hosted by the Winterset Parks & Recreation department and sponsored by Madison County Realty. In addition to a chair, drinks and a snack, you probably want to throw in a blanket, or at least a sweater, this time. The movie is scheduled to begin at dusk. Sunset is scheduled for 8:06 so I’d recommend being there by 7:30 so you can get settled and not miss the beginning.
