Weekend in Winterset, Aug. 10-12

The Winterset Marching Huskies have been in band camp rehearsal all this week, and tonight (Thursday) at 6:00 pm on the courthouse lawn, the public is invited to hear their first performance of the year with a sample of the 2017 halftime program. The band boosters will be serving root beer floats as a free-will donation for the band.

Re:home is open this weekend starting today (Thursday) from 11:00 to 7:00, Friday from 10:00 to 6:00, and Saturday from 9:00 to 5:00. Check out their schedule of open dates for the remainder of 2017:

Due to weather, the Winterset Public Library’s pool party had to be postponed last week, and has been re-scheduled for this evening from 6:00 to 8:30 pm.

The movie “Dunkirk” (PG-13) opens at The Iowa Theater tonight. Directed by Christopher Nolan (of The Dark Night, Inception, Interstallar, etc.), this acclaimed production about resistance and survival in World War II was just released in July of 2017.

And here’s the rest of the week’s schedule at The Iowa:

Winterset has TWO great outdoor family movie nights this weekend. The first one is on Friday evening, August 11, with food starting at 7:00 pm at the Madison County Historical Complex. “Night at the Museum 2” starts at 8:15 pm.

The Winterset Art Center is having a “Slip and Dye Night Out” on Friday, August 11 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, to learn the art of indigo dyeing with artist Maggie Howe. Adults are invited to explore the plant and science magic of dyeing with indigo. A silk scarf will be provided for each student to dye, and students may bring one or two additional natural fiber items to dye as well. Participants will fold, scrunch, or twist the items to make cool designs, then dye them with indigo (nature’s tie-dye). The class fee is $28 for Winterset Art Center members and $33 for non-members. Pre-registration is required. Contact Maggie Howe at 515-490-7801 to see if there is still any space available.

Happy National Farmers Market Week to the Madison County Farmers’ Market, which continues its great services on Saturday mornings on the Winterset square from 8:00 am to noon through early October. The goal of National Farmers Market Week, August 6-12, 2017, is to encourage families to purchase from farmers and other vendors at local farmers markets. An important part of the goal is to support the small farmers and agricultural producers that use farmers markets as sales outlets. According to USDA figures, farmers markets and other direct agricultural sales contribute $9 billion to the U.S. economy. And a piece of that $9 billion is directly attributable to small businesses and family farms. Farmers markets provide necessary infrastructure to support their agricultural commerce. Farmers markets also have a broad impact on communities. They build community connections through urban and rural linkages. They also stimulate local business development and job creation.

Central Iowa Auto Club will host a Classic Car Show & Shine on the Winterset square from 4:00 to 7:00 pm this Saturday, the 12th. There is no entry fee, and there will be door  prizes for car entrants. Dust off your classic car and bring a lawn chair to sit and enjoy the oldies music. Maybe you will see Snappy’s Garage car hauler there!

The second outdoor family movie event in Winterset this weekend is at the Aquatic Center on Saturday, August 12. Winterset Parks & Recreation Department invites you to attend their annual Dive-In Movie, Little Mermaid. Swim from 6:30 – 8:30 pm (cost is regular admission or season pass), and after swimming, enjoy the free movie and popcorn poolside. Movie will start at approximately at 8:45. The event is sponsored by Madison County Realty.

The Winterset Cidery will have a music night featuring Brick Imerman on Saturday, the 12th, from 7:00 to 9:00. Food by Up in Smoke Barbecue will be available from 6:00 to 8:00.
