Tonight is the night to see Map of My Kingdom at The Iowa Theater, a play commissioned by Practical Farmers of Iowa, written by Mary Swander, Iowa’s Poet Laureate. It deals with a very important question that affects a lot of land owners in Iowa and Madison County: When the time comes, what will become of the farm? The play will be presented at The Iowa Theater this evening, January 26th at 7:00 pm, and will be followed by a 20-minute “talk back” facilitated by the playwright. Tickets are $10 per person, and there are still seats available at the time of this post. Accompanying the play, Mary Swander will lead a Farm Legacy Letter Workshop on Saturday, January 27, from 9:30 am to 11:30 am at the Madison County Historical Complex. Participants will create a solid draft of a letter that offers basics about their farmland, their strongest memories, and what they want most for their land’s future. The workshop is free, but registration is required as spaces are limited.

But before Friday’s live entertainment, a new movie opens at The Iowa Theater tonight: “Jumanji, Welcome to the Jungle” (PG-13).
The first Legislative Forum of the 2018 session will be held on Saturday morning, January 27th at 9:00 am at the Jackson Building. Iowa House District 25 Representative Stan Gustafson and Iowa Senate District 13 Senator Julian Garrett will be in attendance from 9:00–10:00 am to answer questions. Also, on Saturday afternoon, Representative David Young will hold a Town Hall meeting (Coffee With My Congressman) from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at the Winterset Junior High commons area.
The Madison County Conservation Board is offering a Community Ice Fishing Day on Saturday, January 27th from 9:00 to noon at Criss Cove. It is open to people of all ages who would like to try their hand at ice fishing, with staff from the Conservation Board and some other experienced anglers on hand to help. A limited number of rods and bait will be available, or you’re welcome to bring your own equipment. A fire and warm beverages will be provided. All participants should come dressed for the weather in multiple layers of warm clothing. This event will be held weather permitting providing the ice meets safety standards.
The Winterset Library is hosting Sew – Knit – Stitch – Create on Saturday morning from 9:00 to Noon. There is also an Instant Pot Cooking Class that day, but the registration is full. They hope to add another class for that soon.
1st Avenue Collective is hosting an Embossed Earring Class on Saturday afternoon, January 27th, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Create three pairs of beautiful earrings in just a couple of hours. Students will learn how to use die cutters, embossing folders, and how to apply colorful patina to copper. No prior jewelry experience needed, just a desire to create. The Madison County Cattlemen’s Association Annual Banquet & Awards event will be held Monday, January 29th at the Jackson Building. Social hour and membership signup begins at 5:30, with banquet including ribeye steaks beginning at 6:30 pm. On a related note, congratulations to Alyssa Evans, who was the Madison County recipient of the Youth Heifer Program for 2018 by Midwest Heritage Bank. She will be recognized at Monday’s program.
Madison County Conservation is hosting a Full Moon Snowshoe Hike on Wednesday, January 31st from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Participants can enjoy the second full moon of January by snowshoeing through Pammel Park. Plan to meet at the Pammel Park Lodge for a warm fire and hot beverages before making your way around the lodge trail on snowshoes. No snowshoeing experience necessary. Snowshoes will be available for use during the event for $5/person. If there is a lack of snow, they will go for a Full Moon Winter Walk through the park. Pre-registration is requested. Tickets are now on sale for the Madison County Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting & Awards Night Banquet. It will be held at the Jackson Building on Thursday, February 1st with social hour starting at 5:00 and program at 7:00. The Winterset Art Center will host a Keepsake Valentines for Adults class on Sunday, February 4th from 1:00 to 2:30 pm. Join artist Sarah Macht in the gallery for tea and cookies while learning about the history of Valentines. Create two keepsake Valentines from a collage of fabric, lace, trim, buttons, and paper. Class fee is $15 for Winterset Art Center members and $20 for non-members. There will also be a youth-friendly version of this class held on Saturday, February 10th from 10:30 am to Noon. Covered Bridges Winery invites you to join them for an evening of Yoga, Wine & Chocolate on February 9th from 6:30 to 9:00 pm. The experience will include a relaxing yoga class from 6:30 – 7:30, followed by a guided wine and chocolate pairing. The cost is $25 per person. Reserve your spot by purchasing tickets online. Class will be led by Melissa Walker from Power Life Yoga in Des Moines. Melissa is a 200-hour RYT and has training in vinyasa flow and restorative yoga.
Attend the Scam Alert Workshop on February 10th at 10:30 am at the Winterset Library and learn how scammers can find you, what to watch for, tips on how to avoid their tactics, and resources on how to lower your chances of becoming a victim.
On Saturday, February 10th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, the Winterset Merchants Group invites you to come in from the cold during the Winterset Chocolate Walk and enjoy decadent chocolate creations while you shop for your Valentine. Participating merchants will offer bite-sized samples, Valentines Day specials, and “sweet” deals!
