Weekend in Winterset • March 14

New Exhibit

Twisted

On Display at the Iowa Quilt Museum

The newest exhibit is up and ready for viewing at the Iowa Quilt Museum. “Twisted” was curated by Mary Kerr and will be on display through June 16. In this exhibit, all the quilts are a new twist on vintage blocks, or unfinished tops that were made anew. IQM gallery hours are Monday-Saturday 10am-4pm, and Sunday 12pm-4pm. Starting April 1st they will be open Monday-Saturday 10am-5pm.

In other Iowa Quilt Museum news, Melody Reels was recently hired as the new director. Many of you will know or recognize Melody from her days at the Chamber of Commerce. Some of you will also know that I was once the IQM director, and I’m very excited to see Melody taking over!

This Weekend

Beer Choir

Saturday • March 16 • 8:00pm
At The Drift with Beer Choir Central Iowa
and Madison County Music Co.

Beer Choir is a social singing event open to all, no talent required! It’s so simple—you get a beer, get a seat, and let yourself be led through a couple hours of hilarious drinking songs from the official songbook, the Beer Choir Hymnal! This time around, we’ll be calling on the Irish faeries to lend us their best auld tunes. Wear green if you don’t want to be pinched!

Non-beer drinkers are also welcome—The Drift has a great selection of wines, cocktails, appetizers and soft drinks. And if you just want to drink and listen, you’re welcome, too, but don’t be surprised when you end up joining in the singing! There is no cover charge.

Earth Mama

Sunday • March 17 • 5:30pm
Sunday Movie Club at the Iowa Theater

This month’s Sunday Movie Club offering is a coming-of-age drama about a pregnant single mother. Set in the Bay Area of California, “Earth Mama” stars Tia Nomore as the young woman, Gia. The film premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. Highly acclaimed by critics, it has been described as heavy yet hopeful . . . a moving look at single motherhood on the margins that features outstanding cinematography. The film is a debut both for its director Savana Leaf and Nomore.

The Iowa Theater’s Sunday Movie Club offers once-a-month screenings of thought-provoking films. Membership costs $75 per year for the 12-movie series, but anyone can attend by purchasing a ticket for $8. Doors open at 5:00; the movie starts at 5:30. The total running time for “Earth Mama” is one hour, and thirty-seven minutes.

Sunday Movie Club screenings include a brief, optional discussion following the credit roll. The book-club-like conversations are variously facilitated by theater staff, board members, and club members.

Enjoy films starring the incomparable Robin Williams on Wednesday in March at the Iowa Theater!

A magical board game unleashes a world of adventure on siblings Peter (Bradley Pierce) and Judy Shepherd (Kirsten Dunst). While exploring an old mansion, the youngsters find a curious, jungle-themed game called Jumanji in the attic. When they start playing, they free Alan Parrish (Robin Williams), who’s been stuck in the game’s inner world for decades. If they win Jumanji, the kids can free Alan for good — but that means braving giant bugs, ill-mannered monkeys and even stampeding rhinos! 1995, PG, 1 hr 44 min
