Weekend in Winterset, July 5th – July 8th, 2018

If you’re a regular at the Winterset Community Band’s Lawn Chair Night Concerts, note that the location is moving to the Madison County Historical complex tonight and next week. Tonight the Winterset Lions Club will be serving up “Americana Food” – hamburgers, hot dogs and the fixings – and there will be a martial arts demonstration during the concert intermission. And if you’re not a regular, go check them out tonight!

This Weekend

The forecast looks like we might see a bit of a cool-down this weekend but if you’ve just had enough of being outside in the heat and humidity, head over to The Iowa for Ocean’s 8 (PG-13). Sandra Bullock (Debbie Ocean) leads her cohorts in an epic jewel heist in this slick and smart heist movie that freshens things up with the all-female cast. If you’re a look-ahead kind of movie-goer, make plans for Incredibles 2—it will be at The Iowa starting July 12th and running for 2 weekends.

The Madison County Chamber of Commerce a the Winterset Parks & Recreation are hosting the second concert in the First Friday Concert Series this Friday, July 6th. Malcolm Wells and the Two-Timers will provide the entertainment, which is sponsored by Pine Creek, Ltd., and Lowe Chiropractic Clinic. During the music intermission, there will be a presentation of a Quilt of Valor to a special veteran.  Additionally, join the Parks and Recreation Department for a bike ride around town prior to the concert, beginning at 5:00 pm. Food (Up in Smoke BBQ) and drinks will be available for sale by 6:00 pm, and the music begins at 7:00 pm. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets, and relax on the gently sloping hillside, and listen to some of the areas best musical entertainers!

Winterset Parks & Recreation will be hosting Yoga in the Park from 9:30 to 10:30 am on Saturdays, July 7th, July 21st and August 4th. Yoga is an excellent way to help build core strength and flexibility and this class is geared for all ages groups from children to seniors. The class will be held in the north shelter at City Park and the fee $2.00. Bring a mat or towel and water. No registration for the class is required; just pay the instructor on site.

It’s not too late to get registered for The Refuge 5K Color Run which will happen Saturday, July 7th, at 9:30 am. In fact, if you’re quick and get registered today, you can still qualify for the early bird price.

On Saturday, July 7th, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm, the Winterset Public Library will be hosting a program titled Two Dukes in the Family. David Freeman, Director of Publications for the International Churchill Society, will trace the surprisingly close connections between John Wayne and Winston Churchill to show that courage was a bond that connected the two great kinsmen. No, they never met nor did they even know that they were distantly related, but John Wayne and Winston Churchill did admire one another from afar. No registration needed. This event is free and open to the public.

Hold On, a cover & dance band specializing in rock music spanning five decades, will showcase their energetic entertainment at The Winterset Cidery on Saturday, July 7th. Up in Smoke will begin serving at 5:30 pm and the music will jive from 7:00 to 10:00 pm. There is a $5 cover charge and it’s probably a good idea to bring a lawn chair.
