Madison County Airing of the Quilts

Saturday • 6/5 • 10:00am – 4:00pm
Dinner & Auction • 5:30 pm

This Saturday, the Iowa Quilt Museum will host their annual Madison County Airing of the Quilts. Hundreds of visitors will journey to our community to enjoy quilts, scenery, landmarks, and attractions—all of which is a real boost for our local economy!

Winterset Citizens are encouraged to add to the community-wide display of quilts by hanging a quilt outdoors somehow—porch rail, fence, clothesline or even out of a second story window. Let’s get a quilt on every street in town!

Saturday evening, at 5:30 pm, the IQM will hold their annual fundraising dinner and auction. Right now, however, ticket sales are significantly below average. Let’s all show our support and appreciation for this organization that works diligently to boost tourism revenue in Madison County. Let them know how proud we are to have them in our community by attending the dinner and auction.

The Iowa Quilt Museum is also celebrating their 5th Anniversary this weekend! That’s five years of providing cultural enrichment to our community, and attracting visitors from across the country to Winterset and Madison County. In that short time, the museum has exhibited quilts from some of the nation’s top quilters and collectors and claimed a position of esteem among other quilt and textile museums.

The Airing of the Quilts event, dinner and auction serve as a main source of income for the Iowa Quilt Museum. Even if you’re not able to attend, take a look at the online auction catalog and bid on an item or two!

Silent Auction

We invited friends of the museum to make their own interpretation of the Iowa Star Block. The response was amazing and we have over 20 of these beautiful blocks. Some are finished and ready to use as wall hanging, some are just the block and are ready to be the centerpiece of your next quilting project!

Live Auction

Fourteen quilts from this year’s auction catalog have been selected as the docket for this year’s live quilt auction. The live auction will take place during our fundraising dinner on the evening on Saturday, June 5th, but if you’re not able to attend in-person, you can place a proxy bid online that will be monitored during the live auction.

Online Auction

Twenty additional items are being offered for auction online only. These include completed quilts, quilt tops ready for completion, and project kits. No matter what your skill level or quilting style, you’re sure to find something that calls to you, and best of all, all auction purchases support the mission of the Iowa Quilt Museum!

“Cruella,” which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson (“Howards End,” “Sense & Sensibility”). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella. In 2007 Winterset pulled out the stops and celebrated the 100th Birthday of native son John Wayne. If you think back on that wonderful weekend, you may remember the recreation of the old-fashioned Wild West exhibition as were staged in the late 1800s and into the 1900s. The organizers called upon, and enlisted, a gentleman who was on the Chicago Tribune staff and an experienced showman in his own right. He pulled in a wonderful collection of entertainers, and at the same time showed his devotion to John Wayne. Shortly thereafter, Brian Downes, that same promoter of the Wild-West and John Wayne, was hired to be the Executive Director of the John Wayne Birthplace & Museum, a position he still holds! Join us as Brian gives us an little overview of not only how he got here, but his “Day with the Duke” as a young reporter, the friendships he’s created with many of the co-stars of the Duke, such as Harry Carey, Jr. and Maureen O’Hara, his experiences meeting Duke fans across the globe, and the expansion of the galleries at the museum; to be featured at the event in May of 2022.
