Broadway at The Iowa

Broadway at The Iowa is a special musical event happening at the Iowa Theater July 16 and 17, including one performance on Friday (7 p.m.) and two on Saturday (2 p.m. and 7 p.m.).
The once-vaudeville stage of Winterset’s historic theater will be filled with the sights and sounds of four Broadway performers, as they share their favorite musical theater tunes during each one-hour show. Piano accompaniment will be provided by Sonya Siebert, Drake University music department faculty member.
The vocalists are traveling to Iowa expressly to benefit the Iowa Theater. Once Broadway reopens this fall, they will be back onstage in New York making this a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity only possible as a result of the pandemic. (silver lining!)

So how has this amazing event come to be? The short is answer is through creative thinking and a phone call. Marianne Fons is the board president of the Iowa Theater. Her child, Hannah lives in Manhattan and was roommates was David Garry, one of the featured performers, for many years. Many times, David and Marianne had dreamed of a way to get him to Winterset. Then, several months ago, Marianne decided to see if she could move that idea from ‘what-if’ status to ‘let’s do it’ status. David recruited three friends to come along and now we’ve got a show!

The event is a benefit for the Iowa Theater with the main goal being to pay down the capital debt incurred during the acquisition and renovation of the historic theater. Debt reduction is a major focus for young non-profits, such as The Iowa, because it allows the organization to focus their revenue toward operating costs and programming and vastly improves their longterm financial health.

The Iowa Theater will be open to full capacity for these performances. Ticket prices are $100 per seat for the first eight rows on the main floor, $75 per seat for rows nine through twelve. Balcony seating is $100 per seat for the first two rows, $75 per seat for row three. Farther-back balcony seats are $50, $40, and $25.
Seating for the Friday and Saturday performances is reserved. Use the button below to choose and purchase your tickets online. If you would like to purchase tickets in more than one seating section, you will need to do so in separate transactions! The final rows in the balcony are “listen only” seats, as views of the stage are obstructed, but the acoustics are great.
You may also choose and purchase tickets at the theater concession stand during the theater’s open hours.
David Michael Garry will also conduct a master class on audition and performance technique on Sunday, July 18, from 9 to 11 a.m. for ten local singers. Fee is $100. Observers may audit for $25. Learn more about the master class by clicking here, and the option to observe the class here.
