Weekend in Winterset • June 9

Tonight

Community Band “Lawn Chair Night”

Thursday • June 9th • 6:00pm Dinner, 7:00pm Concert
Madison County Historical Complex Lawn

This photo is a few years old. Ron Fletcher, very sadly, is no longer with us. I’m sure the community band still feels his absence every time they gather.

The Winterset Community Band will entertain us again tonight with the second of five concerts, all to take place on the lawn of the historic Bevington mansion on the grounds of the Madison County Historical Museum. This week, the Madison County Democrats will serve a meal of pork loin sandwiches, chips, cookies or a bar, and water at 6:00pm, followed by the concert which will begin at 7:00. This week’s lineup includes some really great tunes!

Beer Choir

Thursday • June 16 • 7:00pm

Beer Choir is a social singing event open to all, no talent required! It’s so simple—you get a beer, get a seat, and song leaders Jon & Megan Barrett will guide you through hilarious drinking songs from the official songbook, the Beer Choir Hymnal! There is no cost to attend and the drink special of the night will be the “Perfect Fourth” Flight—a 5 oz serving each of four pre-selected brews.

Of course, non-beer drinkers are also welcome. (The Drift has a great selection of wines, cocktails, appetizers and soft drinks.) And if you just want to drink and listen, you’re welcome, too, but don’t be surprised when you end up joining in the singing!

Find Flat Charlie

June 6 through August 2nd
Madison County Historical Complex

Throughout the summer weeks, the museum will be hiding “Flat Charlie” around the museum grounds for little ones to find! Charlie, or Charles D. “Doc” Bevington, built the Bevington Mansion in 1856 and owned all the land that is now the Historical Complex.  Back then, Charlie roamed this ground and this summer he’s doing it again.

Each week, Charlie will be hidden in a new location, and picture clues of where he’s hiding will be posted to our Facebook and Instagram social media pages. The pictures will further reveal Charlie’s location throughout the week, until he’s found. The first child to spot Charlie each week will receive a prize of a free local treat!

The first week of Flat Charlie will be June 6. Keep an eye on the Madison County Historical Museum’s Facebook page to try your hand at finding Charlie’s first hiding spot!

If you not the parent that had your child’s entire summer planned out by the end of April, don’t worry!

Many of the community’s youth summer activities are still open and accepting registrations. Find the entire list in our SUMMER PLANNING GUIDE. And you can also check out the community calendar page to see how events align with your own calendar!
