Building Better Birders

September 29 & September 30
Madison Count Conservation

The Madison County Conservation Board invites you to learn how to be a better birder this weekend. The workshop will be held over two days with the goal of helping to create birders across Iowa that contribute knowledge about birds through participation in Citizen Science programs such as Christmas Bird Counts, Great Backyard Bird Counts, Project Feeder Watch, etc. This event is free and no registration is required. You can come for as many or as few sessions as you would like (see the schedule below.) Meals are not provided.

This workshop will be conducted by Kelly McKay (BioEco Research and Monitoring Center), with assistance from Mark Roberts (Clinton County Conservation), Brian Ritter & James Wiebler (Nahant Marsh Ed. Center). Funding for this workshop was provided by the Resource Enhancement and Protection – Conservation Education Program (REAP-CEP).

Auditions: It’s a Wonderful Life

The Winterset Stage at the Iowa Theater

The Winterset Stage will hold auditions Sunday, October 1st, at 6:00, for It’s A Wonderful Life: A Life Radio Play. The beloved American classic will come to captivating life as a live 1940s radio broadcast at the Iowa Theater November 30-December 2ndRoles are available for both children and adults, and any interested actors are welcome at auditions, regardless of experience. All audition materials are provided; nothing needs to be prepared in advance. Bonus…since this is a radio show lines won’t have to be memorized! Rehearsals will begin October 8 and will be 3-4 evenings per week.

The Winterset Stage is also announcing a new scholarship program, funded by private donations and proceeds from their “Night of Vaudeville” variety show earlier this year. The community arts scholarship is intended to support and empower aspiring artists within our community by providing financial assistance to individuals who wish to participate in specific education, experiences, or training in creative disciplines such as visual arts, performing arts, music, literature, etc.

This scholarship program is open to students of all ages who live in Madison County, Iowa, and are enrolled in a Madison County, Iowa, school. Applications for the scholarship can be submitted at www.thewintersetstage.org/scholarship

Music Together & Youth Choirs at Madison County Music Co

Starting October 4th and 5th

Starting in October, Madison County Music Co. is offering a full line-up of classes for children from birth through 8th grade!

Music Together classes are for babies, toddlers and preschoolers with a caregiver to experience musical play, social interaction and build motor skills and language development. There are three different sessions this fall.

Four Youth Choirs are offered for young musicians in PreK through 8th grade. Kinder Choir meets on Wednesday afternoons, the others on Thursday afternoons.

Planning Ahead

Adult Hand-building Pottery Class

Thursdays • October 12, 19, 26 • 5:30 – 8:00pm
Winterset Art Center

Learn how to create clay forms with your hands and be guided through the techniques of pinching, coiling, and slab rolling. Using hand tools, students will learn how to trim, texture and apply glazes to their pieces. Supplies are included: 10lbs of clay, glazes, use of tools and firing fees.


Hunter Eduction Field Day

In celebration of the 54th Annual Madison County Covered Bridge Festival, the Winterset Rotary Club is once again hosting the Covered Bridge 5K Run/Walk. Register as an individual or as a family team of two. The race begins at 9:00 am. Medals will be awarded to 1st, 2nd & 3rd in each age group, and t-shirts are included for each paid entrant.
