Great People, Great Places

Update to Carver Park

Check out the results of this renovation to Carver Park! The Winterset Parks & Recreation Department posted this…

THANK YOU to our Parks crew in coordination with the Street Department and Winterset Municipal Utilities for our Carver Park Renovation! Also, a huge THANK YOU goes out to Jim Nelson and Carol Liechty for collaborating on our renovation project of Carver Park! It was our goal to create a space that was more inviting for our visitors to sit down and have conversations, while also staying true to the original design. We hope to add additional information signage about George Washington Carver in the future! Thanks to the Greater Madison County Community Foundation for awarding this project grant funding!

The Addams Family: The Musical

Friday • November 3 • 7:00pm
Saturday • November 4 • 2:00 & 7:00
Winterset High School

Winterset High School Husky Drama will present three performances of their fall musical, The Addams Family, next weekend. Tickets are $6 and can be purchased in advance using the button below, or at the door. The crew of talented young thespians have been working hard for weeks to bring this story to life and would sure love to see a big audience for their shows!

In the kooky, upside-down world of the Addams Family, to be sad is to be happy, to feel pain is to feel joy, and death and suffering are the stuff of their dreams. Nonetheless, this quirky family still has to deal with many of the same challenges faced by any other family, and the spookiest nightmare faced by every family creates the focus Lippa, Brickman, and Elice’s musical: the Addams kids are growing up. The Addamses have lived by their unique values for hundreds of years and Gomez and Morticia, the patriarch and matriarch of the clan, would be only too happy to continue living that way. Their dark, macabre, beloved daughter Wednesday, however, is now an eighteen year-old young woman who is ready for a life of her own. She has fallen in love with Lucas Beineke, a sweet, smart boy from a normal, respectable Ohio family — the most un-Addams sounding person one could be! And to make matters worse, she has invited the Beinekes to their home for dinner. In one fateful, hilarious night, secrets are disclosed, relationships are tested, and the Addams family must face up to the one horrible thing they’ve managed to avoid for generations: change

They Were Gassed Severely:
Charles Webber Aikins and Winterset in World War I

As part of the State Historical Society of Iowa’s ongoing Iowa History 101 webinar series, Winterset resident Scott Pate will explore the impact of chemical weapons on Iowan soldiers in World War I.  His talk centers on local Captain Charles Webber Aikins and Winterset’s wartime experience. The webinar can be viewed via your phone, tablet, or computer on Thursday, November 9, from noon to 1:00 pm.

In 1917, Company A, 168th Infantry, left Des Moines, beginning their journey to the Western Front in France. Captain Aikins led this company for over a decade, comprised primarily of men from Madison County. The experiences of this company framed how Winterset and surrounding communities followed the Great War. A German gas attack on May 27, 1918, became a critical moment for Aikins, Winterset, and the American Expeditionary Force. By examining newspapers, diaries, military documents, and medical literature, it becomes possible to illuminate the story of Charles Aikins, offering an interpretation of an overlooked aspect of Winterset and Iowa history.

You can register here for this free webinar: history.iowa.gov/history/iowa-history-101-series. Pate’s session will be recorded and can be viewed later at your convenience.
