Conclave

Sunday • March 16 • 5:30pm
Sunday Movie Club at The Iowa Theater

“Conclave,” a political thriller produced last year, is based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Robert Harris. The standout cast includes Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini. Fiennes plays Cardinal Thomas Lawrence, organizer of the conclave required to elect the next pope. He finds himself investigating secrets and scandals connected to the candidates.

“Conclave” received positive critical reviews upon its premier and has earned many awards, including the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay. It was nominated in eight Academy Award categories, including Best Picture and won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

“Conclave” is the March installment of the Sunday Movie Club series, a once-a-month screening on the third Sunday of each month that offers slightly off-the-beaten-path, thought-provoking films that have received critical acclaim. Last month’s film, the prison drama “Sing Sing,” also highly acclaimed, received an Academy Award nomination for the actor in the lead role, Colman Domingo, though he lost to winner Adrian Brody, star of “The Brutalist.”

Movie club screenings include an optional, brief discussion with the audience following the film. This month’s discussion will be co-facilitated by theater manager Scott Smith and club member Sue Williams. Williams is Catholic, has read the book the film is based on, and is enthusiastic about participating.

The movie, 2 hours in length and rated PG, starts at 5:30. Ticket price for nonmembers is $8. The film is in English.
