This Weekend

McLintock!

Friday • May 27th • 7:00pm
Saturday • May 28th • 1:00pm
The Iowa Theater • presented in partnership with the John Wayne Birthplace & Museum

In celebration of the return of the John Wayne Birthday Celebration, presentations of McLintock! will be presented *free* – a donation of $5 to the Iowa Theater is encouraged.

Please note that you must still obtain your free ticket(s) – either online or at the Iowa Theater box office –  to ensure your seat(s), and must show tickets at the door for entry. Any unclaimed seats will be offered to unticketed walkup guests five minutes prior to showtime.

On pins and needles all day, waiting for the return of his daughter from college, the influential and self-made cattle king, mining, and timber baron, George Washington McLintock, has one more visitor: his estranged and obstinate wife, Katherine. With his empire carved out of a wilderness, the sudden arrival of settlers creates extra tension among the ranchers, and to further complicate matters, the territorial governor, Cuthbert H. Humphrey, bullies the local Comanche Indians, forcing them to abandon their land. For a small and dusty town near Mesa Verde, this is a bit more excitement than one could handle. Now, the Fourth of July celebration is just around the corner. Will G.W. reconcile with Katherine? 2hr, 7 min, 1963, Not Rated

Madison County Airing of the Quilts

June 1-4

The Airing of the Quilts is the Iowa Quilt Museum‘s annual community celebration and fundraiser, with hundreds of quilts displayed all over our community on Saturday, June 4. Quilts will hang in several of our famous Covered Bridges, at our City Park, at the Madison County Historical Complex, the Winterset Public Library, the Art Center, on fences, on porches, in shop windows… everywhere! Tickets for the Airing are $20 and get you into tons of displays, and for an extra $5 you can go to our local quilt guild’s quilt show at the elementary school (see more details about that in the next area). Buy your ticket online before May 28, and you pay only $15!

This year’s event will also be accompanied by classes and a retreat starting June 1st. Quilters can choose from 9 class options over the course of three days and take advantage of space in the beautiful Winterset Livery to work on their projects and socialize with other makers.

Of course, a major community event like this requires the help of many volunteers—this one even more than some because all of the quilts on display need to be supervised all day. If you’re a Winterset Citizen who would be willing to volunteer a couple hours of your time on Saturday, June 4th, click the volunteer link below.

Covered Bridge Quilt Show

The Covered Bridge Quilters have moved the date of their annual quilt show to coincide with the Airing of the Quilts. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased as an add-on to a ticket for the Airing of the Quilts, or can be purchased at the door of the quilt show.

Thursdays • June 2nd – July 7th • 6:00pm Dinner, 7:00pm Concert
Madison County Historical Complex Lawn

This photo is a few years old. Ron Fletcher, very sadly, is no longer with us. I’m sure the community band still feels his absence every time they gather.

The Winterset Community Band will kick off their summer season on Thursday, June 2nd, with the first of five concerts, all to take place on the lawn of the historic Bevington mansion on the grounds of the Madison County Historical Museum. At this event, the VFW Auxiliary will serve a meal at 6:00pm followed by the concert which will begin at 7:00. This is hometown music at it’s finest!
