Ok, I’ll be honest — this Winterset citizen is still in holiday break mode, currently soaking up some sun in Florida, and returning to real life tomorrow. Here’s my current view as I type:
Don’t hate me because I’m warm!
For those who want to stay in holiday-zen mode, the Winterset Art Center is hosting a free adult coloring group for that exact purpose, from 10:00 am to noon on Thursday, and again on January 19th.
Also, if you’re interested in increasing your computer or mobile device skills in 2017, the Winterset Library is offering a series of classes that start on Thursday at 2:00. Do call in advance to find out if space is still available.
On Thursday evening at 6:00, Piece Works Quilt Shop invites you to attend the first meeting of the Piece Works Quilt Shop Quilt of Valor Group. Quilts of Valor makes and distributes quilts to veterans locally and nation-wide. Anyone who is interested can attend. The meeting will be mostly informational, and there is no need to bring anything. They will be discussing what they want the group to be and answering questions. They will also have a sewing day on Sunday, January 15th from noon to 4:00 to work on QOV quilts.
The Winterset Stage is starting its 2017 Children’s Theater Class this Saturday. This class is the cornerstone educational offering of the organization. Call to see if spots are still available for this great opportunity, or visit www.thewintersetstage.org for more information.
Coming Soon
An artistic opportunity of a different variety is available for students age 9-12, starting on Monday: a Chalk Pastels class at the Winterset Art Center for four weeks with artist Cynthia Thomas.
If you’re ready to get back outside despite the winter weather, the Madison County Conservation Board invites you to enjoy a Nature Night on Thursday, January 12th from 6:00 to 7:30 pm.
Or, if you want to get moving inside, the Winterset Parks & Recreation Department will be starting its Adult Co-Ed Volleyball League on Wednesday evenings, January through mid-April at the Junior High Gym. The fee is $125. This is for men and women age 18 years and up, out of high school. Three men and three women make up a team. A captains’ meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 25, 2017. Registration ends January 13, 2017.
New 4-H’ers and their families can register for a New 4-H Families Orientation on Tuesday, January 17th from 5:30-7:30 pm. This event will be held at the Jackson Building on the Madison County Fairgrounds. Orientation is a great opportunity to learn about upcoming events, county 4-H activities, and to ask questions. Dinner will be provided, and separate activities will be offered for youth. To register, call Jennie at 515-462-1001 or e-mail hargrove@iastate.edu.
On January 21st from 7:00 to 10:00 pm, enjoy live music by Jacey Gutknecht at Covered Bridges Winery. Here’s what they have to say about their upcoming guest: “With soulful lyrics and catchy melodies, people of all ages find themselves connecting to Jacey’s music. After returning from a year building houses in Mexico, the 22 year old singer-songwriter from the Midwest began pursuing a career in music along side Nashville based company Lighthouse Music. In the short time she has been performing she has already had the opportunities to perform at iconic venues such as The Bluebird Café and 12th and Porter in Nashville, the Dripping Springs Songwriters Festival, as well as record two albums. She is currently working on her third studio album as she tours the Midwest sharing her music.” Isn’t it great that these Music at the Winery events aren’t limited to summer anymore? Come and see their beautiful new facility just off of Highway 169 north of town.
If “read more” is on your list of new year’s resolutions, consider participating in the regular book discussions offered at the Winterset Public Library. The January discussion will be on Thursday, the 26th at 7:00 pm.
That’s all for now. Best wishes to all for a happy and prosperous 2017!
