Based on the humorous writings of author Jean Shepherd, this beloved holiday movie follows the wintry exploits of youngster Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley), who spends most of his time dodging a bully (Zack Ward) and dreaming of his ideal Christmas gift, a “Red Ryder air rifle.” Frequently at odds with his cranky dad (Darren McGavin) but comforted by his doting mother (Melinda Dillon), Ralphie struggles to make it to Christmas Day with his glasses and his hopes intact. 1983, PG, 1hr 34 min

New Exhibit at IQM

Rebound, Renew, Reimagine
On display through April 5
IQM is open 7 days a week!

The Iowa Quilt Museum just opened a new exhibit of works from the Manhattan Quilters Guild. The IQM has displayed work from this group in the past and I can attest that their quilts are always amazing! Since this is a contemporary exhibit, viewers will do well to think of these quilts as works of textile art rather than pieces of warmth like traditional quilts. The IQM is located on the south side of the square and is open daily. If you have visitors coming for the holidays, a trip to the IQM makes a wonderful outing.

The Manhattan Quilters Guild presents an exhibition of new work that reflects on life beyond the pandemic. This project grew out of a shared desire to acknowledge the challenges of COVID while celebrating the renewed energy, connections, and activities that once felt out of reach. For this show, each artist has created a quilt inspired by a single word beginning with “re”—a creative thread tying the collection together.

Founded in 1980 when a handful of strangers answered an ad in Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine, the Manhattan Quilters Guild has grown into a dynamic community of professional artists with an international presence. Today, its members include designers, curators, educators, writers, mentors, and entrepreneurs. While their roots are in traditional quilt making, their work often stretches beyond the quilt itself, exploring contemporary directions in fiber art.

The concert will conclude with Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus, accompanied by piano, violin, and cello. Audience members who know the piece are warmly invited to join the choir for this closing number.

Nearly 60 performers—ranging in age from 4 to well over 40—will take part in the event. The choirs are directed by Megan Barrett and presented under the auspices of Madison County Music Co. The community is invited to attend and enjoy an afternoon of festive music. Admission is by free-will donation, with a suggested contribution of $5 for adults.
