While searching for some stability, Stark forms a bond with a disturbed classmate, Plato (Sal Mineo), and falls for local girl Judy (Natalie Wood). The Senior

At 59, Mike Flynt may be too old to be on a college football field, but not too old to feel the weight of unfinished business. After nearly four decades, he returns to his alma mater to take the hit that changed everything. Bruised, doubted, and nearly broken, he pushes for one more game, not for glory, but for the teammates he lost, the family he fractured, and the ending he still believes is possible. Rated PG, 1 hr 39 min

Nickel Boys

Sunday • September 21 • 5:30pm
Sunday Movie Club at The Iowa Theater

The Academy Award-nominated movie “Nickel Boys” will be screened as this month’s installment of the theater’s Sunday Movie Club. Doors open at 5:00; the movie starts at 5:30. Total running time is 2:20.

The film, set in the 1960s, is based on the 2019 novel The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead. The movie adaptation premiered in 2024 at the Telluride Film Festival. It was named one of the top ten films of 2024 by the American Film Institute.

The story’s lead character, a teenager named Elwood Curtis, is hitchhiking to the campus of the prestigious university to which he has received a full scholarship when he accepts a ride from a man who, unbeknownst to Elwood, is driving a stolen car. When the man is arrested, Elwood gets sent to the Nickel Academy, a reform school in Florida. The school is internally segregated, with the white students treated differently than the black ones. Elwood becomes close to Turner, another inmate. Together, they plot an escape.

Admission for Sunday Movie Club screenings is free with membership. Club membership is $75 per year, and anyone can join at the theater or online at to www.the-iowa.com/club. Nonmember ticket price is $8.

The Sunday Movie Club series is a once-a-month screening, usually on the third Sunday, that offers slightly off-the-beaten-path, thought-provoking films that have received critical acclaim. Club screenings include an optional, brief discussion with the audience following the film. Concession-stand offerings at The Iowa include beer, wine, hard cider, Coke products, movie candies, and Iowa grown popcorn served with real butter.
