History, Music, and Food On The Hill

Madison County Historical Complex

As part of the final three Thursday night Community Band concerts at the Madison County Historical Complex, there will be a FREE open house at one historic building for an hour beginning at 5:30 pm. Tonight you can roam through the Bevington Mansion in its Victorian finery. That leaves plenty of time for food starting at 6:00 pm and the band at 7:00 pm. So come on out to The Hill with your lawn chair or blanket, enjoy a bit of Madison County history, a summer meal under the trees, and entertainment by local musicians and performers.  (Check below for which historic building will be open on next week!)


Community Band Lawn Chair Night

The Winterset Community Band is kicking off their summer “Lawn Chair Night” series tonight! The meal starts at 6:00 and includes walking taco, dessert and a drink served by the Madison County Republicans. The band starts at 7:00pm with Ave Lemon providing entertainment at intermission.

9 to 5 The Musical

The Winterset Stage is thrilled to announce its third community musical production: 9 to 5 The Musical, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and based on the hit 1980 film. A talented cast of local performers has been hard at work bringing this hilarious and empowering story to life. Full of big hair, big dreams, and bigger laughs, 9 to 5 The Musical tells the story of three working women who take control of their office—and their lives—proving that friendship and courage can create real change.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream Ballet

Winterset Ballet & Dance at The Iowa Theater

A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of Shakespeare’s most whimsical tales and is just as delightful when reimagined through ballet. Winterset Ballet and Dance stages this performance each summer to help support our local theater with all proceeds going back to the Iowa Theater! All tickets are $10 and can be purchased in advance or at the door.


Barn Quilt Painting Class

Saturday • June 28 • 1:00 – 5:00pm
Iowa Quilt Museum

The Iowa Quilt Museum is offering a fun and creative afternoon and a chance to create your own ‘barn’ quilt. Participants will receive a 2×2 ft sanded and primed board with the barn quilt design of your choice (choose from 18!) and access to 25 exterior paint colors. All supplies are provided, just wear old clothes or bring an apron. Cost is $100 and can be paid at the door. Limited spots are available so sign up today by calling 515-462-5988 (Mon–Sat 10–5, Sun 12–4) or emailing: director@iowaquiltmuseum.org.

Madison County Farmer’s Market

The heat won’t keep away the dozens of vendors who will set up for the Farmer’s Market again this Saturday. Karam’s Grill, Mulberry Farm and Tiki Treats will all be serving up food.

As part of the Thursday night Community Band concerts at the Madison County Historical Complex, there will be a FREE open house at one or our 14 historic buildings for an hour beginning at 5:30 pm.  On Thursday, July 3, you can roam through the McKee Agricultural Barn and its vast collection of farming implements and displays.  And there will be plenty of time for food starting at 6:00 pm and the band at 7:00 pm.  Check back to find out which building will be open before the final July 10 Community Band concert.
