A Fond Farewell!

Dear Friends,

This is my final post as the author of The Winterset Citizen. Beginning next week, this lovely little publication will be in the capable hands of its new stewards, the Madison County Chamber of Commerce.

While I’ve been looking for an opportunity to pass this portion of my weekly workload along for some time, now that the moment has arrived, I find myself a little sad to turn the page on what has been a very meaningful chapter in my life. For nearly seven years, I (or sometimes my former business partner Meisha and I) have written to you almost every week, gathering and sharing the stories, events, and activities that shape the culture of our community. I truly believe Winterset is a remarkable place to live. We are surrounded by abundant opportunities and, even more importantly, by extraordinary people who work tirelessly to make those opportunities possible.

Now I’ll be able to focus a bit more on being one of those “opportunity creators.” For the past 14 months, I’ve also been an owner at The Warehouse on 2nd, where our goal is to create a vibrant hub for community activity — especially arts-related events. I also teach and help operate Madison County Music Co., where I have the joy of planting and nurturing musical seeds nearly every day.

Thank you for your readership, your sponsorship, and your steadfast support of this publication during my tenure as its author — and even before me, under its founder, Julie Feirer. It has truly been a pleasure.

With gratitude,
Megan Barrett

K-Pop Demon Hunters Sing-Along

Winterset/Japanese Friendship Exchange Program

Six Winterset students are starting to fundraise for the Winterset/Japanese Friendship Exchange. This summer, 6 Japanese students from Minami Alps in Japan will be traveling to Winterset for 10 days. Our students will be matched up with them and their families will host the student. They will be using funds that are raised to help support activities that will help show the Japanese friends what Winterset and Iowa are all about.

Our students also need funds to help cover the travel expense for when they go to Minami Alps in the summer of 2027 to stay with their Japanese friend and experience their culture. Winterset Ballet & Dance is sponsoring this showing of the K-Pop Demon Hunters movie at The Iowa—and it’s a sing-along! Tickets will be a free-will donation!

Watercolor Workshops

Saturday • March 7 • 8:30am AND 1:00pm
Winterset Art Center

The Winterset Art Center is offering two watercolor classes on March 7th, both taught by Iowa Watercolor Society member Robert Zeidler. These sessions are recommended for some watercolor experience or who consider themselves intermediate level students.

In the morning class (8:30am-12:00pm), the composition will be a horizontal landscape. The painting process will focus on placing strokes of color next to another color for interesting blending and a more exciting result.

In the afternoon class (1:00pm – 4:30pm), the design provided will be a vertical composition of a butterfly on flowers, utilizing a painting approach that starts predominantly with damp paper and finishes with drier applications of paint.

Attendees are asked to bring their own basic watercolor materials. The instructor will provide a demonstration so you will see how he approaches the design, then each student will have plenty of time to work on their own piece and ask questions.

The fee for each class is $35. Sign up with the Winterset Art Center today to reserve your spot at the table!
