October is here…time for some spooks on the big screen!
After Barbara (Geena Davis) and Adam Maitland (Alec Baldwin) die in a car accident, they find themselves stuck haunting their country residence, unable to leave the house. When the unbearable Deetzes (Catherine O’Hara, Jeffrey Jones) and teen daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder) buy the home, the Maitlands attempt to scare them away without success. Their efforts attract Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), a rambunctious spirit whose “help” quickly becomes dangerous for the Maitlands and innocent Lydia. 1988, PG, 1 hr 32 min

Pieowa: A Piece of America
Sunday • October 5 • 2:30pm
The Iowa Theater

Pieowa, an award-winning documentary film by Iowan Beth Howard, was released this summer to much acclaim and has already enjoyed screenings in locations around Iowa and beyond. Howard’s book, World Piece, launched in 2022 on the United Nation’s International Day of Peace, is a memoir about a round-the-world pie-making journey she made to promote goodwill and cultural acceptance.
Producing a documentary, Howard’s first, was a natural progression of her obsession with pie. Pieowa celebrates the myriad ways pie is woven into Iowa’s (and America’s) culture, the lengths people will go to for a slice, and how this humble pastry “can bake the world a better place.”
The film features comedian Tom Arnold, NPR economics correspondent Scott Horsley (NPR = No Pie Refused), Better Homes & Gardens food editor Jan Miller, pie-loving journalist Chuck Offenburger, and everyday people—church ladies, farm wives, pie shop owners, State Fair pie competitors, chefs, food historians, RAGBRAI pie eaters, and humanitarians of all ages.
Tickets for the special event, now available online at The-Iowa.com, are $10 and include a slice of pie. Susie Jones, Madison County resident and pie-baker extraordinaire, is making and donating the pies. Jones is an Iowa State Fair blue-ribbon winner and lifetime member of the American Pie Council. Jones promises numerous varieties of pie, including fruit and cream favorites.
During the event, donations benefitting local Paw Pantry food bank, located at Winterset Middle School, will be accepted. The film’s slogan is Give Piece A Chance. According to Ms. Howard, “Pie is accessible, affordable, and all-encompassing. Pie is meant for sharing. Pie makes people happy. That’s why the world needs more pie.”

Next Week
Madison County Covered Bridge Festival
Saturday • October 11 • 9:00am – 7:00pm
Sunday • October 12 • 9:00am – 3:00pm

Next week’s main event is [drum roll] the Covered Bridge Festival! If you haven’t heard the news yet, the festival hours are changing a bit and I think it’s an excellent adjustment. The festival will stay open until 7:00 on Saturday and close at 3:00 on Sunday before the parade.
Another change—due to the major road construction happening around town—is parade route. Parade participants will line up at the Winterset Aquatic Center starting at 2:00 pm, and the parade will get underway at 3:00 pm. The parade will head east on Jefferson Street then south on 7th Ave, before turning east on Court Avenue. It will then turn south on 2nd Ave before heading east on Washington Street, north on 4th Street, then east on Court Avenue again before ending past the City Park Campground.

A unique event at this year’s covered bridge festival is an abridged concert-style performance of music from The Bridges of Madison County musical. There will actually be four performances over the course of the festival—Saturday at 1:00 and 3:00pm, and Sunday at 12:00 and 2:00.
Starring as Francesca is Christine Hope, a Carbonell Award–nominated actress and singer whose career spans Off-Broadway, national tours, and regional theatre, as well as recording, commercial, and television work. Known for bringing a compellingly human presence to roles that balance emotional intelligence and vulnerability, Hope is a proud member of Actor’s Equity Association and SAG-AFTRA.
She will be joined by a talented cast, including Whit Ellsworth (Robert), Jason Stolte (Bud), Tori Clausen (Caroline), Zach Jordan (Michael), and Megan Barrett (Route 21 “Lady”). Live music will be performed by Sonya Siebert (piano), Judy Woody and Graham Barrett (violin), Katy Schmitt (cello), and Megan Barrett (guitar).
Whether you’re a fan of live live theater and music, or will just enjoy a short break from the festival to rest your legs, this will be a really enjoyable addition to the festival.

More details on the festival in next week’s post!
