Pieowa: A Piece of America
October 17 & 18 • 7:00pm & October 19 • 2:00pm
The Iowa Theater

In case you missed it the first time around, three more opportunities to see Pieowa are coming our way!
Pieowa, an award-winning documentary film by Iowan Beth Howard, was released this summer to much acclaim and has already enjoyed screenings in locations around Iowa and beyond. Howard’s book, World Piece, launched in 2022 on the United Nation’s International Day of Peace, is a memoir about a round-the-world pie-making journey she made to promote goodwill and cultural acceptance.
Producing a documentary, Howard’s first, was a natural progression of her obsession with pie. Pieowa celebrates the myriad ways pie is woven into Iowa’s (and America’s) culture, the lengths people will go to for a slice, and how this humble pastry “can bake the world a better place.”
The film features comedian Tom Arnold, NPR economics correspondent Scott Horsley (NPR = No Pie Refused), Better Homes & Gardens food editor Jan Miller, pie-loving journalist Chuck Offenburger, and everyday people—church ladies, farm wives, pie shop owners, State Fair pie competitors, chefs, food historians, RAGBRAI pie eaters, and humanitarians of all ages.
Tickets for the special event, now available online at The-Iowa.com, are $10 and include a slice of pie. Susie Jones, Madison County resident and pie-baker extraordinaire, is making and donating the pies. Jones is an Iowa State Fair blue-ribbon winner and lifetime member of the American Pie Council. Jones promises numerous varieties of pie, including fruit and cream favorites.
During the event, donations benefitting local Paw Pantry food bank, located at Winterset Middle School, will be accepted. The film’s slogan is Give Piece A Chance. According to Ms. Howard, “Pie is accessible, affordable, and all-encompassing. Pie is meant for sharing. Pie makes people happy. That’s why the world needs more pie.”

Alison Frank, whose State Fair Pie is featured in the film (along with her mother and her son), is coordinating MORE DELICIOUS PIES for movie-goers to enjoy. If you’re a baker, please consider baking a pie to share. If you’re attending one of the performances, plan to enjoy some pie and make a free-will donation towards food assistance for Madison County children and families.

The Life of Chuck
Sunday • October 19 • 5:30pm
Sunday Movie Club at The Iowa Theater
The Iowa Theater’s Sunday Movie Club selection for October is the 2024 American film “The Life of Chuck,” winner of the People’s Choice award at last year’s Toronto Film Festival, where it premiered. The film’s plot follows the life of Charles “Chuck” Krantz, but in reverse order. British actor Tom Hiddleston (Loki) plays current-day Chuck, with three other actors in the role of the protagonist at seventeen, eleven, and seven years old. As we go back in time, we find out that Chuck was an extremely gifted dancer as a young person, but that the grieving grandfather that raised him convinced him to become an accountant rather than following his dream.
The movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reported 80% positive reviews from among 264 critics and said, “The Life of Chuck is a buoyant and often wonderful adaptation of one of Stephen King’s more cosmically optimistic tales.” A complex dance sequence performed by Hiddleston and Anna Basso is one of the highlights of the film.
The Sunday Movie Club is the Iowa Theater’s once-a-month screening of slightly off-the-beaten path, thought-provoking films. Similar to a book club, the screenings include an informal, optional (and brief) discussion after the credits roll. Admission for club members is free; nonmembers are welcome to purchase an $8 ticket. Membership is $75 per year for twelve critically-acclaimed movies. For more information or to join, visit www.the-iowa.com/club.
