October 18 & 19, 7:00pm • October 20, 2:00pm
The Iowa Theater
The film follows the misadventures of Jack Skellington, Halloweentown’s beloved pumpkin king, who has become bored with the same annual routine of frightening people in the “real world.” When Jack accidentally stumbles on Christmastown, all bright colors and warm spirits, he gets a new lease on life — he plots to bring Christmas under his control by kidnapping Santa Claus and taking over the role. But Jack soon discovers even the best-laid plans of mice and skeleton men can go seriously awry. 1993, PG-13, 1 hr 16 min
Ghostlight
Sunday • October 20 • 5:30pm
Sunday Movie Club at the Iowa Theater
Sunday, October 20, the Iowa Theater will screen a film entered in this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Distribution rights for “Ghost Light” were snapped up within one week of its premiere, and the film was released to US theaters in June.
In the movie, a construction worker named Dan Mueller winds up taking a role in a Shakespearian play. Dan is unused to addressing his feelings in his day-to-day life, but finds that when he is in the role of a character, his emotions come out. The plot of the play, Shakespeare’s tragedy “Romeo and Juliet,” mirrors some of what has been happening in Dan’s life regarding his own teenage children.
Critic Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times called “Ghost Light” a quietly compelling film that shows how the power of theater can bring people together, in this case teens and parents.
The screening is the October installment in The Iowa’s Sunday Movie Club programming, which offers a thought-provoking film the third Sunday of each month. Movie Club selections are often films from other countries, but “Ghost Light” is an American film.
Doors open at 5 p.m. The movie starts at 5:30. Total running time (TRT) is 1 hour, 55 minutes. Membership in the Sunday Movie Club costs $75 per year for 12 movies. Anyone can attend a single screening by purchasing an $8 ticket. A brief, optional discussion follows every screening. The book-club-like conversations are variously facilitated by theater staff, board members, and club
members.
