The Taste of Things
Sunday • June 16 • 5:30pm
Sunday Movie Club at The Iowa Theater
The actors who play the principal characters in “The Taste of Things,” Juliette Binoche and Benoit Magimel, were actually married in real life for a number of years. The film, which won the award for Best Director at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, screens at the Iowa Theater Sunday at 5:30. Total running time is 2:15. The dialogue is in French, with English subtitles.
Set in France in 1889, “The Taste of Things” centers on the relationship between Eugenie (Binoche), an esteemed cook, and Monsieur Dodin, the gourmet she has served for twenty years. The two have a synergy in the kitchen that creates mouthwatering and innovative culinary treats for Dodin and his fellow gourmands. As viewers watch the multi-course meals being prepared using nineteenth century techniques (like a wood fired oven), they can almost smell the food! The film is at times almost like a documentary of vintage French cooking methods.
The relationship between Eugenie and Dodin, which is already romantic, deepens when she has a bout of ill health. Dodin, who has asked Eugenie to marry him several times over the years, begins cooking for the beautiful woman who has cooked for him and his friends for so long, and proposes to her once again.
The screening is part of the Iowa Theater’s Sunday Movie Club, which offers once-a-month opportunities to view thought-provoking films. Membership costs $75 per year for the 12-movie series, but anyone can attend by purchasing a ticket for $8. Sunday Movie Club screenings include a brief, optional discussion following the credit roll. The book-club-like conversations are variously facilitated by theater staff, board members, and club members.
