Weekend in Winterset • December 1

It’s December, which means that as of today you’re officially allowed to hang up Christmas lights without any judgment from your neighbors. Don’t just take my word for it: A recent survey of ~4,000 US homeowners found that December 1st was the day most people identified as acceptable to put up Christmas lights! So…

Holiday Lights on The Hill

Daily through December 31st
Madison County Historical Museum Complex

Once again, the Madison County Historical Society has decked its ‘hills’ with an outdoor light display. Open daily to the public and running through the end of the year, guests are invited to meander around the circle drive and take in the various displays near the outbuildings. There is no cost to enjoy our lighted display, however, a free-will donation can be dropped in the mailbox near the museum entrance to help defray the expense of the lights and the electricity to keep them shining. Grab the kids and a cup of cocoa, and enjoy the Holidays Lights on The Hill!

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

Wednesday • December 7 • 7:00pm
Way Back Wednesday at the Iowa Theater

Half off popcorn on Way Back Wednesday!

As the holidays approach, Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) wants to have a perfect family Christmas, so he pesters his wife, Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo), and children, as he tries to make sure everything is in line, including the tree and house decorations. However, things go awry quickly. His hick cousin, Eddie (Randy Quaid), and his family show up unplanned and start living in their camper on the Griswold property. Even worse, Clark’s employers renege on the holiday bonus he needs. 1989, PG-13, 1 hr 37 min

Ever wondered why the title includes “National Lampoon?” National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation originated from a short story by writer John Hughes called “Christmas ’59”, which was published in the December 1980 issue of National Lampoon magazine. National Lampoon was an American humor magazine that ran from 1970 to 1998. The magazine started out as a spinoff from the Harvard Lampoon. National Lampoon magazine reached its height of popularity and critical acclaim during the 1970s, when it had a far-reaching effect on American humor and comedy.
