In the past 26 years, Union State Bank has awarded 409 Renaissance Student $50 scholarships—one to a student in each grade, 9th-12th, each academic quarter. The students are chosen by the Winterset Senior High School teachers based on the criteria of character, volunteer work, leadership, and academic commitment.

These four students who are the first term Renaissance Student recipients:

Lions Club Soup Supper

The Winterset Lions Club is gearing up for their 21st Annual Soup Supper Fundraiser. Bring your freewill donation to New Bridge Church and enjoy a menu of Potato, Vegetable Beef, & Creamy Chicken Noodle soups, plus chili and possible surprise offerings from new chefs. A selection of desserts plus relishes will round out the meal.

The Lions Club is also accepting donations of clean, dry plastic film that is recycled into benches. (You can see examples in front of Covered Bridge Realty.) Plastic grocery and shopping bags, newspaper sleeves, vinyl mailing envelopes, bubble wrap, zipper bags, bread wrappers, produce bags/wrappers, and other plastic wrappings can all be recycled through this program.

Festival of Lights & Lighted Parade

Downtown Winterset

Head to Winterset’s courthouse district starting at 5:00pm for food, music, free horse-drawn carriage rides, shopping, and live and lighted window displays. The parade starts at 7:15pm, ending with an appearance by Santa! The fun concludes with the movie Elf at the Iowa Theater at 8pm.

Planning Ahead

Women’s Giving Circle 4th Quarter Meeting

Monday • December 5 • 6:00 – 8:00pm
Union State Bank Community Room

The 4th quarter Madison County Women’s Giving Circle meeting will be Monday, December 5, from 6:00 to 8:00, in Union State Bank’s Community Room in Winterset. The meeting will be a potluck social event with no presentations. Union State Bank is providing coffee. Tableware will be provided. Bring your $50 check made out to Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines. Prospective members are welcome to attend and learn about the Madison County Women’s Giving Circle. 


Gallery Walk: Fiber Art Now – Excellence in Quilts 2022 Exhibit

Friday • December 9 • 4:30 reception, 5:00 gallery walk
Iowa Quilt Museum

The current exhibit at the Iowa Quilt Museum showcases 27 quilts chosen by Nancy Bavor, Juror to the Call for Quilts from Fiber Art Now in the Spring of 2022. Nancy will lead this event on Friday, December 9, walking attendees through the gallery while also discussion the selection process, talking about the artists and their inspiration, and explaining why these particular quilts were chosen and show they stood out from the other submissions.

Kathy Suprenant and Lisa Ellis, two artists whose work is shown in the exhibit will also be in attendance.

A reception with light appetizers and wine will start at 4:30, with the gallery walk to follow at 5:00pm. This event is FREE so make sure to register now before it’s filled!
