Make Music this Year!

Registration Open for Music Lessons & Youth Choir
at Madison County Music Co.

Madison County Music Co. has just opened up their registration for school-year music lessons. MCMC offers instruction in piano, guitar, violin, cello, ukulele, voice, flute, and trumpet and welcomes both adult and youth students. They have openings for lessons during the day (great for adults and homeschool families) and after school/evenings (for school kids and working folks).

Most lessons happen in a one-on-one format but group lesson are offered for guitar & ukulele instruction. A NEW offering this year is beginning violin for 4 and 5 year olds. Yes, 4-year-olds can play the violin. (see next picture!)

Madison County Music Co. also operates the Madison County Satellite program of Heartland Youth Choir and has choir ensembles for singers in 1st through 8th grades.

Heartland Youth Choir (HYC) provides was founded in 2002 as a performance-based program for youth that emphasizes musical literacy and character development. HYC provides unique opportunities for children of diverse backgrounds with a particular aptitude in vocal music to explore that interest beyond their school setting.

The HYC satellite program offers students in Madison and surrounding counties a high-quality choral experience, allowing them to have the same wonderful opportunities without needing to drive to Des Moines every week. There are three ensembles in the Madison County Satellite:

  • Medesimo for 1st and 2nd grade – Meets Mondays 3:45-4:30
  • Melodie for 3rd-5th grade – Meets Thursdays 4:30 – 5:45
  • Musica for 6th-8th grade – Meets Mondays 5:00 – 6:30

Museum Day Live

Madison County Historical Museum

The Madison County Historical Museum is excited to participate in the Smithsonian magazine’s 18th annual Museum Day! In an effort to give people more access to historical and cultural offerings, the Historical Complex, along with participating museums across all 50 states will provide free admission on Saturday, September 17th. Head out to ‘the hill’ and experience all of the complex’s offerings, including seasonal exhibits, 14 outbuildings and a guided tour of a real Victorian mansion. Everyone visiting the complex on the 17th will be admitted for free!

Evening Under the Stars

Pepper Harrow Farm

Evening Under the Stars is a special event hosted each year by Madison County Foundation for Environmental Education (MCFEE) on behalf of the Madison County Conservation Board. This year’s event will be hosted at Pepperharrow Farm in Winterset.

Spend a fun-filled evening with friends, surrounded by sunflowers and dahlias. Enjoy a social hour sipping local wines and listening to live music. Take a stroll through the gardens while you peruse live and silent auction items featuring local businesses and artists. Try your hand at wildlife themed games of skill or take advantage of the option to cut your own flower bouquet.

Dinner is next, followed by “world famous” local desserts. Hear about the important work of the Madison County Conservation Board and updates on the new Madison County Conservation Center to open soon. Round out the evening with a glimpse through a high-powered telescope, under the stars.

Proceeds from this year’s event will go to the currently under-construction Madison County Conservation Center. This almost 13,000 square foot gathering hub, nestled in the timber of Pammel Park will be completed later this year. With event space, a modern classroom, outdoor patio and exhibit hall, this facility will serve as a gateway to the wilds of Madison County.

MCFEE is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that has been dedicated to supporting the Madison County Conservation Board since 1981. All proceeds from MCFEE fundraisers provide support for environmental education programs, park facility upgrades, and management of natural resource areas.

Tickets are now on sale for Evening Under the Stars. Event tickets are $40/person or $320 per table (seats 8). Tickets are also available to purchase in person at the Madison County Conservation Board office located at 2273 Clark Tower Road.

City Park is turning 150 and the Winterset Parks & Recreations Department is going to celebrate by hosting their 1st annual .150K Race (492ft) on Saturday, October 1st. There will be live music, yard games, & a silent auction benefiting Hold Our Youth Tight, beer from 1st Down Brewing Co. and awesome shirts from Lumberjack Design Co. You will also get a donut at the halfway mark to ensure that you have enough energy to make it to the finish line! Costumes are encouraged and there will be an award for best costume! You have plenty of time to start training, so get registered today.
