Sunday Movie Club: The Power of the Dog

Sunday • September 18 • 5:30pm
The Iowa Theater

In “The Power of the Dog,” a domineering rancher responds with mocking cruelty when his brother brings home a new wife and her son, until the unexpected comes to pass.

The Iowa Theater’s new Sunday Movie Club premieres Sunday, September 18, with “The Power of the Dog,” directed by Jane Campion. The 2021 film received a record twelve Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director, which Campion won. The movie, a Western starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst, is based on the 1967 novel of the same title by Thomas Savage, an American writer who wrote popular novels, many of them Westerns, during 1944-1988.

Membership to the Sunday Movie Club is $75 per year, which works out to around $6 per movie. Members have the option to reserve their favorite seats. Theater board member Marianne Fons said, “We’re delighted with the response to this new program for the theater. The club has 42 charter members.”

Nonmembers are also welcome and encouraged to attend. Nonmember ticket price is $8. The mission of the program is to provide the opportunity for audiences to see recent, Oscar-nominated films that are a bit outside the theater’s usual, mainstream fare. A special feature of the monthly movie club is a lively, brief discussion following the film. For “The Power of the Dog,” Rebecca Fons, the Iowa Theater’s film programmer, will travel from Chicago to moderate the discussion. Future post-screening discussions will be moderated by theater manager Scott Smith, and others.

Movie club screenings are a little earlier than the Iowa’s usual showtime. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the movie starts at 5:30. Movie club films scheduled for the rest of this year are PARASITE (October 16), BELFAST (November 20), and ANOTHER ROUND (December 18). Films and dates for the first three months of 2023 will be announced this fall.
