Weekend in Winterset • May 5

Winterset Cemetery Damage and Restoration Fund

The oldest portion of the Winterset Cemetery, with graves dating back to the 1850s, was damaged in the April 23rd storm. The wind blew over gravestones and trees that, in turn, damaged many other stones. Some standing trees also need to be removed, as their root system is questionable, and special care will be taken not to damage more gravestones as they come down. Tree removal should start this week and expect to see the cemetery lawn to also need some tender loving care after the tree work is completed.

Once the area is cleared of debris, each affected gravestone will be inventoried, along with the amount of damage it received. Some need to be reset; others are broken and will need repairs. The total number of gravestones is yet to be determined, but a list of names will be made available once they are known.

If you would like to contribute to the repair and restoration of the Winterset Cemetery, here’s how.

  • Checks can be made out to the City of Winterset. Your contribution is tax-deductible.
  • Include “Winterset Cemetery” in the check’s memo line.
  • Drop off your check or mail to City of Winterset, 124 W Court, Winterset IA 50273

Brinton Surprise by Red Cedar Chamber Music

Saturday • May 7th • 7:00pm
The Iowa Theater

Red Cedar presents a multi-media extravaganza featuring live chamber music accompanying magic lantern slides and early silent films from the Brinton Collection of early entertainment materials. Philip Wharton has created a magical score for The Fairy of Springtime, a 1902 French film which features hand-painted color. Michael Kimber has scored Venetian Tragedy, a nine-minute drama with a surprise ending. And new to Red Cedar for this project, a duo of French composers, Jean-Francois Charles and Nicolas Sidoroff, have teamed up to create a major multi-media work which explores the life of the great French filmmaker Georges Méliès, known to most from the 2011 film Hugo. Historian Michael Zahs provides narration with music performed by violinist Miera Kim, cellist Carey Bostian, and guests artists guitarist John Dowdall and flutist Claudia Anderson for this entertaining program.
