Broadway at the Iowa!

July 16 & 17

If you also subscribe to email updates from the Iowa Theater, then you got the message earlier this week about a wonderful event happening at the theater in July featuring four Broadway performers. Suffice it to say, this is a pretty ‘big woo’ and I’m more than just a little excited about it!

This coming week, I’ll be sending out a separate post with more information so watch for that! In the meantime, you can visit the Iowa Theater’s website if you’re ready to get tickets.

Cruella

Saturday at 7pm, Sunday at 2pm
The Iowa Theater

“Cruella,” which is set in 1970s London amidst the punk rock revolution, follows a young grifter named Estella, a clever and creative girl determined to make a name for herself with her designs. She befriends a pair of young thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they are able to build a life for themselves on the London streets. One day, Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend who is devastatingly chic and terrifyingly haute, played by two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson (“Howards End,” “Sense & Sensibility”). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella. PG-13; 2 hr 14 min

Brunch, Live Music & Abby’s Deep Dish Pizza

Sunday • 6/12 • 10:00 – 2:00 (brunch) AND 4:00 – 6:00 (music, pizza)
The Drift

Head to The Drift Sunday morning for brunch and then return in the evening for live music and Abby’s Deep Dish Pizza! The Drift now serves brunch EVERY Sunday from 10:00 am to 2:00pm. They’ve put together a delicious selection of savory and sweet dishes, along with their takes on the traditional mimosas and bloodies! If it’s a nice morning, you can even eat outdoors on their patio.

Make a return trip in the evening (following an afternoon nap, perhaps!?) when Willie Mac will be playing live music and Abby’s Deep Dish pizza will be available for purchase (both whole pizzas and by-the-slice). Order your whole pizza ahead of time for carry-out or eat-in. Sounds like a pretty good way to spend a Sunday!

Wellness Wednesdays in Winterset:
Hidden Hunger with Mary Krisco

Wednesday • 6/16 • Noon
Winterset Public Library

Wellness Wednesday Lunch and Learns will be the offered each week for the remainder of June. All sessions will be about an hour and held in the Community Meeting room at the Winterset Public Library, 123 N. Second Street. The library asks that if you are experiencing symptoms of Covid 19 to refrain from attending. You may certainly bring and enjoy your lunch if your schedule so dictates.

Mary Krisco is the ISU Extension WIN Coordinator (Wellness and Independence through Nutrition) for adults 50+. Hunger is a hidden problem among Iowans aged 50 and older. When older Iowans are admitted to hospitals, one out of four are found to have malnourishment that interferes with their recovery. One reason that so many older adults are malnourished is that they can’t afford healthy food. Yet, of all the older adults who are eligible for Iowa Food Assistance, less than 40% actually apply for it. The WIN Program is an ISU Extension campaign to convince older adults to get the food help they need. If you are over 50, chances are you know an older adult who is at risk for malnutrition. Come to this presentation to find out how you can help combat this hidden hunger.

Oklahoma!

June 17, 18, 19 at 7:00pm, June 20 at 2:00pm
The Winterset Stage at the Madison County Fairgrounds

After having to postpone the show for a year, The Winterset Stage is ‘chompin’ at the bit’ to launch their production of Oklahoma! next week! The cast of about 40 has been rehearsing, mostly outdoors, since late April. The show will be performed outdoors as well—in the North Show Arena at the Madison County Fairgrounds.

There are four performance dates to choose from: June 17, 18 and 19 at 7:00pm and Sunday, June 20th at 2:00pm. The entertainment will actually begin an hour before showtime with live music, food, games, activities, and even a square dancing demonstration.

To see some fun photos from rehearsals, check out the Winterset Stage’s Facebook Page. To get tickets, click on the button below. Tickets can be purchased at the door if they’re still available but it’s recommended that you buy them in advance, especially if you want to sit in an actual chair instead of bleacher!
