Black History Month Movie Matinees – Selma

Black History Month is an annual observance in February, celebrating the past and present achievements of African Americans. This observance prompts us to remember important people, events, achievements, and contributions by African Americans to the arts, literature, sports, and pop culture. Join the library for some powerful, black history-based films.

First up is Selma; although the Civil Rights Act of 1964 legally desegregated the South, discrimination was still rampant in certain areas, making it very difficult for blacks to register to vote. In 1965, an Alabama city became the battleground in the fight for suffrage. Despite violent opposition, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his followers pressed forward on an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, and their efforts culminated in President Lyndon Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965. All matinees are free. The library will provide free popcorn; please bring your own beverage.

Susan B. Anthony’s Birthday Celebration!

Commemorate the 100th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution’s 19th Amendment, known as the “Susan B. Anthony Amendment” which gave women the right to vote in 1920, as well as Anthony’s 200th birthday anniversary. Local historian Linda Smith will share an informative presentation about Anthony’s life and the speech she gave at OUR OWN Madison County Courthouse in 1875! Enjoy cookies and cake to celebrate the life of Susan B. Anthony, who fought along with her friend Frederick Douglass for women’s rights and to abolish slavery.

Activities and cake from 10:00-10:30; presentation from 10:30-11:00. This free event is recommended for ages 12 & older and is a partnership between Dream Big Dreams 2020 and the Winterset Public Library.

Take this free class to get you started (or restarted) on the basics provided by the Madison County Genealogical Society. No registration required for this class that will meet on Saturdays in February.

Sunday Wine Down: Jesse Gutierres

Jesse of Jesse & The Medicine Men will regale attendees with his rich voice that covers a very wide range. He can vibrate the basement with his bass, and yodel to high falsetto. There is no cover charge for this event, if you like what you hear, tip the musician. Cheese and crackers, pub mix and/or chocolate plates will be available for purchase.

If your kiddo is looking forward to playing softball or baseball this coming spring and summer, make sure you get them registered before February 16th. There are three different age groups: Pee Wee (1st & 2nd grades), Minors (3rd & 4th grades), and Majors (5th & 6th grades). You’ll find more information and links to get registered on the Winterset Little League website.
