LAST Community Band Lawn Chair Night

Thursday • 7/11 • 7:00pm
Madison County Historical Museum

This final concert of the summer will be held on the porch of the Bevington Mansion at the Madison County Historical Complex. A beef burger meal will be served by the Madison County Historical Society as a fundraiser for Passport to the Past activities. During the intermission, audience members will have the opportunity to participate in Madison County trivia.


Trivia Night

Winterset Cidery

The summer Trivia Night tradition continues tonight at the Winterset Cidery. Join your fellow cider-lovers and compete for bragging rights! Competition begins at 7:00 so head out a little early to get your cider and register your team of 1-6 players.


Super Creative Galactic Space Journey

Friday • 7/12 • 11:00am
Winterset Public Library

Kids ages 5 through 13 are invited to join author/illustrator Tim Read on a creative, intergalactic journey of the silly kind, as he ventures into a world of unknown aliens, silly stories, and imaginative adventures. Tim will draw live as he tells stories for the audience and is sure to leave them creatively inspired and feeling silly. Registration is required for this event but there is still space. Musical Theater, Sr Camp

The Winterset Stage

If you have a tween that has been singing and dancing around your house all summer, send them to The Winterset Stage next week to try out Musical Theater camp. Winterset High School drama instructor Meredith McKay will be be leading young dramatists in this camp where the actors will work together to create a short musical theater production and have a ton of fun along the way. This Weekend at the Iowa Theater

Toy Story 4

Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the gang embark on a road trip with Bonnie and a new toy named Forky. The adventurous journey turns into an unexpected reunion as Woody’s slight detour leads him to his long-lost friend Bo Peep. As Woody and Bo discuss the old days, they soon start to realize that they’re worlds apart when it comes to what they want from life as a toy. G / 1 hr, 40 min


Opening Reception for “Stitched Through Time”

Iowa Quilt Museum

The Iowa Quilt Museum has just opened a new exhibit titled, “Stitched Through Time: A History of Quilting.” The exhibit is the creation of guest curator Judy Schwender, retired curator from the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky, and explores the progression of quilts and quilting over the course of history—examining its basic materials, its most rudimentary tools, and current day gadgets.

Another big celebration for the IQM on Friday night is the unveiling of the Red & White Donor quilt top. This quilt top honors the donors whose financial contributions were instrumental in the opening of the Iowa Quilt Museum. The board of directors at the IQM extends an invitation to the entire community to this Friday’s opening reception and to see the quilt top.


Scandinavian Cooking Class

Learn to make some delicious Scandinavian recipes for your family. Lisa Allesandro from local restaurant “Anything Sweet and More” will show you how to create two “deilig” Scandinavian dishes.


Star Party

Pammel Park Nature Center

The Winterset Public Library and Madison County Conservation will be co-hosting a Star Party to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. This family-friendly event will be held at the Nature Center in Pammel Park. Join in for moon/star activities, crafts, and a campfire with s’mores from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. Upper Iowa University Astronomy Professor Dr. Jeff Butikofer will help us navigate the night sky with our eyes and through telescopes from 8:30 – 10:00 p.m. Bring your own telescope if you have one. Live Music | Boomerang

Saturday • 7/13 • 7:00 – 10:00pm
Covered Bridges Winery

Who doesn’t enjoy partying and dancing to classic Stones, Beatles, Doobies, Temptations and more? Boomerang is all about playing the classic songs everyone loves and having fun. The Boomerang guys formerly populated several of Central Iowa’s most recognized regional bands, including Terra Firma, Night Flight, The Flight, Transit and The Echoes Five. And three band members are proud members of the Iowa Rock-and-Roll Hall of Fame. Weather permitting, music will be outside so bring a chair if you’d like. There is a $5 cover for this event and a food vendor will be serving from 6:30 – 8:30 pm with music starting at 7:00.

Online registration will be open July 15th – July 26th. If you need to register a child for school this fall, please log into your parent portal and complete the annual update/registration. If you have questions, call the Administration Office at 515-462-2718.


Motorcoach Trip to the International Quilt Museum

Friday • 8/2
Departing at 7:00am from the Iowa Quilt Museum

If you’re looking for a fun quilty experience, join IQM director (and Winterset Citizen blogger) Megan Barrett on a motorcoach trip to the International Quilt Museum on Friday, August 2nd. While at the IQSCM, you can see the following exhibits: ‘Collecting & Recollecting,’ ‘SAQA 30th Anniversary,’ ‘150 Years of Red and White,’ ‘Kathy Caraccio: Quilt Series,’ ‘Liz Axford: Overlay,’ and ‘Whimsy’ without having to worry about the driving. You’ll be treated to a guided tour through some of the exhibits and others can be self-explored. The tour will also include a behind-the-scenes tour of the storage and preservation rooms of the IQSCM.

The price of the tour is $100 per person ($90 for IQM Members) and includes: comfortable motorcoach transportation, admission to the IQSCM plus a behind-the-scenes tour, lunch and snacks, trips to two quilt shops (sorry, no allowance provided!) and quality time spent in the company of like-minded quilters. A portion of your registration cost also helps support the Iowa Quilt Museum enabling us to continue providing top-notch exhibits and programming.

The tour will depart from the Iowa Quilt Museum at 7:00 am and return at approximately 9:00 pm. A minimum of 39 travelers are needed by July 26th. Sign up through the Iowa Quilt Museum website or call the museum at 515-462-5988.


Madison County Fair
July 17th – 21st

Bring the whole family out for a day or night of fun activities for all ages at the Madison County Fair. There is no charge for admission and plenty of free entertainment throughout the day to keep you busy without breaking the bank. Impact Pro Wrestling will be performing daily in the free entertainment lawn near the Varied Industries Building. You can also find Mr. Nick’s Balloon Animal Creations, face painting, and the Little Farmer Barn petting zoo in the same area. And, of course, there will be a variety of livestock from local 4-H and FFA exhibitors and livestock shows throughout the week. The Gotcha Games Carnival opens at 5 p.m. daily. On Sunday, go to Cowboy Church, watch the Farm Bureau Cook-Out Contest.

All motor arena or grandstand night show admission is $10 for adults, $5 for ages 5-12, and children under Preschool are free.
