This Weekend

John Wayne Birthday Celebration

Friday • 5/24
Saturday • 5/25

John Wayne was born May 26th, 1907, right here in Winterset and so this weekend we toast The Duke. This year marks fifty years since the release of True Grit so you have three chances to catch that film at The Iowa this weekend. (See the movie schedule below.) We’re also welcoming Ashley Campbell (daughter of Glen Campbell) and Dean Smith to town for the birthday party. Mr. Smith is a stuntman and actor who worked with John Wayne in several films and he’ll be doing a ‘meet & greet’ at the John Wayne Birthplace Museum at 2:00pm on Saturday.

Put on your dancing shoes (boots) and scoot on out to the Jackson Building for a Country Barn Dance on Friday night at 8:00. This a free event and it features the Salt Creek Band performing oldies, country and classic rock. Food & beverage will be available for purchase.

On Saturday you can start your day with breakfast at the firehouse, then cheer on the participants in the 5K run/walk which will begin and end at the John Wayne Birthplace Museum, and enjoy a horse parade that will start at the Madison County Fairgrounds, come through town on Court Ave and continue on to the museum.

The annual dinner and benefit auction for the JWBM will take place at 5:00pm at the Jackson Building on Saturday. Reservations are required for that so call the museum and see if tickets are still available – 462-1044.

Coming Soon

Community Band Lawn Chair Night

Thursdays • June 6th • 6:00pm meal, 7:00 pm music
Courthouse Lawn

Like apple pie with ice cream, fresh lemonade, and fireworks on the Fourth of July, there’s just something quintessentially small-town summer about sitting outside and listening to live music where the grown-ups chat between songs and the kids run off to the edges and play or dance along. The Winterset Community band will be making this happen at Lawn Chair Night concerts on the courthouse lawn every Thursday through July 11th. Each week food is available for purchase through a different community group and the Winterset Community Band regales listeners with their talent. On Thursday, June 6th, the VFW Auxiliary will be serving beef burgers, chips, water, ice cream and other desserts. Bring your lawn chair or a blanket and come enjoy a fun evening with fellow community members!

First Friday Concert Series | Adam Bruce & April Lynn

Friday • June 7 • 6:00pm food, 7:00pm music

These events are free to attend and hot food will be available for purchase, as well as beer, wine coolers, and bottled water. Food and beverages will be available for purchase beginning at 6:00 pm, and live music begins at 7:00 pm. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets, relax on the gently sloping hillside, and enjoy summer under the stars! June’s entertainment will be provided by Adam Bruce & April Lynn.
