Black History Month Movie Matinees – Glory

Thursday • 2/20 • 2:00 – 4:30pm
Winterset Public Library

Join the library for some powerful, black history-based films during Black History Month.

Next up, Glory is a celebration of a little-known act of mass courage during the Civil War. Following the Battle of Antietam, Col. Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick) is offered command of the United States’ first all-African-American regiment, the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. With junior officer Cabot Forbes (Cary Elwes), Shaw puts together a strong and proud unit, including the escaped slave Trip (Denzel Washington) and the wise gravedigger John Rawlins (Morgan Freeman). At first limited to menial manual tasks, the regiment fights to be placed in the heat of battle and eventually the 54th acquit themselves valiantly at Fort Wagner, SC, charging a fortification manned by some 1,000 Confederates.  All matinees are free. The library will provide free popcorn; please bring your own beverage.

Showing at the Iowa Theater

During World War I, two British soldiers — Lance Cpl. Schofield and Lance Cpl. Blake — receive seemingly impossible orders. In a race against time, they must cross over into enemy territory to deliver a message that could potentially save 1,600 of their fellow comrades — including Blake’s own brother.  R, 110 min

The second of five versions of “A Star is Born” and not to be confused with the recent Lady Gaga/Bradley Cooper version will be showing at the Iowa this Way Back Wednesday. Garland and Gaga were both 32 when their respective “Star Is Born” films received an October release in theaters, and the actresses each sought to have the coveted titular role launch—or in Garland’s case, relaunch—their career as a major movie star. Yet what now stands as the crowning achievement of Garland’s legacy ironically marked the end of her career as a marquee name in Hollywood.
